The Values Exercise

This document provides a values exercise to help determine the most important values for an individual. It contains a list of over 100 values and instructs the reader to: 1) Select their top 10 values from the list 2) Choose their top 5 from the 10 3) Pick their top 3 from the 5 4) Identify their number 1 most important value 5) Optionally, mark 5 values important to their desired career with an identifying letter. Here’s my other favorite brainstorming exercise and it’ll help you figure out the second half of your essay in about
five minutes. To begin, pick your top 10 values from the list below.

Finally, if you know what career you’d like to pursue--Engineering, for example--put the first letter of that career
(E) beside five values of a great Engineer. Maybe you write an “E” next to collaboration, autonomy, and helping
others, and in the blank you write in “working with my hands.”

Once that’s done, set these aside.

I’ll tell you what to do with them in a little bit.
