■ There a lot terminologies in film field that we have to understand before
proceeding to other chapter.
■ These terminologies and elements are standardized and being used
globally.

FILM MOVEMENT
 Definition: films that’s have been produced with a particular period
and/or nation that share significant traits of style and form.
 Example:
■ Classical Hollywood Cinema (1908-1927)
■ German Expressionism (1919-1926)
■ Italian Neo-Realism (1942-1951)
■ Soviet Montage (1942-1951)
EDITING
■ Definition : the process of joining individual shots together into complete film
■ Editing puts multiple shots together to creates a smooth narrative in an order to
make obvious sense in terms of time and place.
SOUND
■ Definition: vibrations that travel through the air or other medium
and can be heard when they reach a person’s or animals ear.
■ Sound in film is important because sound represent emotion,
convey information, transfer the story to the viewers through actor
dialogue

■ Diegetic Sound
■ Non Diegetic Sound
Diegetic Sound :
 Sound whose source is visible on the screen or whose source is implied to be present by the action of
the film:
i. voices of characters
ii. sounds made by objects in the story
iii. music represented as coming from instruments in the story space

Non Diegetic Sound :


 Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:
narrator's commentary
i. sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
ii. mood music
iii. Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space.
ACTING
 Definition : The art and occupation of an actor

 The representation or demonstration of a usually fictional/ imaginary character on stage or film


STORY
 Definition : a part of fiction that narrates a chain of related events.
 A narrative, either factual or fictitious, verbally or written, that is design to
interest, amuse, or instruct the emotion of the hearer or reader.
LITERATURE
 Definitions : writing in which expression and form in a connection with ideas of
permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features.
 Example: poetry, novel, history, biography, and essays
 Film is generally a visual version of a literature ; a good film will portray emotion
and aesthetic value of any written story or manuscript.
IDEOLOGY in FILM
 Definition: a set of ideas that constitute one’s goals, expectations and actions.
 Ideology is sometimes identified as a body of ideas reflecting the social needs of
an individual, group, class, and culture.
 Ideology refers to a systematic "world view" which defines our concepts of self
and the relations of the self to the state or any form of the collectivism.

 Auteurs' : a filmmaker usually director, who exercise creative control over his or
her works and has a strong personal style.
THEORY
 Definition: a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something,
especially one based on general principles independent of the thing to be
explained.
 Example: film theory, art theory, film appreciation theory, film culture theory
 Its also a guide or principles to understand certain topics.
