While President Duterte has made misogynistic and sexist comments, two new laws were passed during his regime that significantly protected women's rights. These laws were the Safe Spaces Act and Expanded Maternity Leave Law. Additionally, women in the Philippines are more empowered today than before in terms of education, government participation, and family decision-making. Duterte's words may offend some but his policies and programs have valued and empowered women, advancing their rights and situation overall in the country.

Women's rights in the time of the Duterte regime, advancing or rolling back?

With a president who has advanced policies for women's rights, how has his misogynist and sexist
rhetoric and remarks affected the women's situation in its entirety?

Women’s rights in the time of the Duterte regime is advancing. During the time of Duterte, two laws
were passed that significantly protected women in the society namely the Republic Act 11313: Safe
Spaces Act and  Republic Act 11210 or the Expanded Maternity Leave Law. These are just few of the
milestones during the Duterte regime. As a woman, I am personally offended when women are called or
commented in a misogynist and sexist rhetoric way. However, as a woman who grew up with the
Duterte administration since he was a Mayor and now the President, his misogynist and sexist rhetoric
comments about women remains a joke and does not affect the women’s situation in its entirety. I
have known the President and experienced his administration where women are valued and
empowered. His works, policies and concrete programs for the welfare of women in the country
cannot be discounted by the way he talks. In terms of access to education, resources and other
dimension of the society, women in the Philippines as a whole are more empowered compared before
and compared to other countries. Filipino women today are heard, they have a place in every branch of
the government, they can speak and decide on significant matters in the family and society; and today
they mattered more than before. Women today has every opportunity to pursue their profession, to
pass laws for their protection and speak up for their rights and this is the substance of empowerment.
Duterte as person and a President is not perfect, his ways and his words may not please as all but if
you are able to look through that you will see the works more than the words. I did not say that his
words won’t hurt or affect us in any way but whoever the President is, women in the Philippines are
intelligent, brave and empowered. Thus, there will be no way for a bad mouth, misogynist and sexist
rhetoric patriarch can roll back the women’s rights in the Philippines. #AbanteBabae
