DAF LF 321 (654-11) Injector 4 Bank 2

The document describes a fault code related to a short circuit detected in the injector bank 2 circuit of an engine. This causes low power as some cylinders are not firing. The reason is a short circuit in the wiring harness that connects the injectors to the electronic control module. Checking the wiring harness connections and inspecting the injector connections is recommended to find the source of the short circuit. If no short is found, the electronic control module may need to be replaced.

Circuit Description

The injector solenoid valves are actuated by the electronic control module (ECM) to
control fuel metering and timing. Each injector solenoid is connected to the ECM by a
supply wire and a return wire. An electrical pulse is sent to the injector from the ECM on
the supply wire and returns to the ECM on the return wire after actuating the solenoid.
Each solenoid valve is normally open, and it is only closed by an electrical pulse from
the ECM during fuel injection and metering.
Component Location

The N14 has an external actuator harness. It extends from the C connector port in the
ECM and runs along the left side of the rocker boxes. There it attaches to the pass-
through connectors mounted in the side of each rocker box. The injector pigtail
connectors are attached to the internal side of the pass-through connectors.

Circuit Description

The injector solenoid valves are actuated by the electronic control module (ECM) to
control fuel metering and timing. Each injector solenoid is connected to the ECM by a
driver wire and a return wire. An electrical pulse is sent to the injector from the ECM on
the driver wire and returns to the ECM on the return wire after actuating the solenoid.
Each solenoid valve is normally closed, and it is only opened by an electrical pulse from
the ECM during fuel injection and metering.

Component Location

The injectors are located under the valve cover.

Shop Talk

 Inspect the injector pigtail nuts and make sure no wires are shorting to ground
against any hardware under the valve cover.
 Inspect the injector pigtail nuts and make sure they are tightened to the proper
torque value. Confirm that the pigtail nuts and solenoid post do not have damaged
threads.
Conditions

 Turn keyswitch OFF.

 Disconnect the engine

harness from the pass-
through connector.

Action

check for a short circuit to ground.

 Measure the resistance from
the driver pin at the pass-
through connector to engine
block ground for each
injector.

 Measure the resistance from

the return pin at the pass-
through connector to engine
block ground for each
injector.

Guided Step 2C - Check for a short circuit from pin to pin.

Conditions
 Turn keyswitch OFF.
 Disconnect the engine harness from the pass-through connector.

 Disconnect the engine harness 16-pin connector from the ECM.

Action

check for a short circuit from pin to pin.

 For six-cylinder engines, measure the resistance from driver pins 3, 5, and 10 at the
engine harness 16-pin connector to all other pins in the connector.

 For four-cylinder engines, measure the resistance from driver pins 4 and 10 at the
engine harness 16-pin connector to all other pins in the connector.
