Exploring Math in Nature

This document contains a student's responses to an assignment on watching a video about how numbers relate to patterns in nature. The student provides: 1) Three things they learned from the video - that numbers can build patterns, nature contains numbers, and the first 12 numbers shown were the Fibonacci sequence. 2) Three unclear things - how the numbers create natural objects, the purpose of sequences, and infinite numbers. 3) What they used to think - that numbers were not important but now see they are critical to measurement and technology. 4) Questions they have - how mathematicians came up with ideas before technology, and what the purpose of studying patterns is.

ASSIGNMENT 1.1(CO1)
Name: Palanca, Jenard Jake P. Section: B14 Date: February 17, 2020

A. Watch the video clip on the Nature by Numbers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkGeOWYOFoA , then complete the statements below.
Note: at least 5 sentences on each

1. Three things that I significantly learned from the video clip

 Upon watching the short video, there are a couple things that I learned. One of them is that
numbers could build up to create a certain pattern to construct something “bigger”. I saw how
equations made up of numbers and symbols built up to become figures of nature. The next thing I
learned was that when I look so deeply into the nature and other things, I would find some
numbers. I think it makes sense how it is connected to the first one I mentioned and it is actually
true since most man-made materials were made with the use of math. Lastly, I learned that the
first 12 numbers shown in the video are actually the Fibonacci sequence.

2. Three things that are still unclear to me

 The three things that unclear to me are as follows; I do not know how the numbers that were
shown piled up to become objects of nature. Secondly, I do not get the purpose of certain
sequences and how these are useful in the real world. Lastly, I do not know how it is possible to
have infinite numbers as it was displayed in the video. There are a lot of things I do not
understand in the video but these three are the ones that I find interesting to ask about.

3. I used to think that

 Before watching the video, I used to think that numbers are not that important. After watching
the short video, I learned that they are critical in the world we live in. Although one could say that
numbers are just numbers, I believe that they could help us in real life especially when we need
measurement for buildings, electricity, chemicals, and etc. The patterns that numbers generate
are fundamentals we can use in order to evolve in technology as human beings.

4. The questions that I want to ask about the video

 As I have watched the video, I have a lot of questions in mind. First is that how do mathematicians
come up with these ideas? If they did not have the technological benefits we are having now, how
were they able to create such idea provided with what they only have? The next question I would
like to ask is what exactly are these patterns for? What must be the point of studying these
patterns?
