Unit 1st: Introduction To Microbiology Microbiology

This document provides an introduction to microbiology. It defines microbiology as the study of microorganisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye, including protozoa, bacteria, fungi, algae, and viruses. It discusses the contributions of Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, who is considered the father of microbiology for his early observations of microorganisms using a microscope in the 1670s. Louis Pasteur's contributions to microbiology are also summarized, including his discoveries in pasteurization, fermentation, vaccines and sterilization. Finally, it briefly introduces Robert Koch as the "father of medical microbiology."
