Onting, AF Reflection Paper No.1

The document is a reflection paper by a student named Alexander F. Onting on Lesson 1 of their Strength of Materials course. In the first lesson, the student learned about simple stresses including normal, shear, and bearing stresses. Normal stress is force applied perpendicular and can be tensile or compressive. Shear stress is applied parallel to the resting force. Bearing stress is contact pressure between two bodies. The student found the lesson confusing but understood the concepts. They realized stress formulas can vary based on the problem and careful analysis is needed. The lesson taught the importance of managing stress in life and knowing how to react to challenges without allowing stress to cause anxiety.

Reflection Paper on Lesson 1

The introduction in our subject “strength of materials” taught me lot of lessons. In

accords to the lesson, our subject is somehow part of engineering mechanics that we took on
the last semesters and I feel the heaviness in my shoulder because I know that this subject will
not be easy for us, specially for me. Strength of materials by definition is the study of the internal
effect and deformation due to applied load, in other words it is the study where we are going to
find what is the effect of external forces to the internal composition of an object or structure. The
first lesson that I encounter in this subject is the simple stresses, it really sounds ‘simple’ but I
know it’s not! Stress is the lead to know and predict the specific deformation of a body. It has
three classification; the normal, shear, and bearing stress. Normal stress is the first
classification that our professor thought, it is the force applied perpendicular and has two types
the tensile and compression. I understand the lesson but its somehow confusing for me, I recall
some part of the lesson that was taught in us on our past semesters.

The next part of our lesson regarding the topic is he shear stress and the bearing stress.
Shear stress is the applied stress parallel ton the resting force. And bearing stress is the contact
pressure between two bodies I know that I knew something about the stress but I was surprised
when I saw that in this kind of stress the formula for area is based on the given problem, and
sometimes it involves normal stress. Thus, I need to be careful in analyzing the problem to
arrive in a right computation and result.

The application of our topic in reality is that in life, there’s always stress but no matter
what happens, let the stress be stress don’t drive it into anxiety until it resolves. The topic lesson
taught me that even though there are lot of challenges in life that will surely put some stress, let
us remember that we should know how to react in any given situation, we should know the
forces that we need in order for us to remain attached or standing at any given load.
