Module 7 INVERSE FUNCTIONS
Learning Determines the inverse of a one-to-one function
Competency
Solve problems involving inverse functions
Specific Learning
Outcomes 1. Determine the inverse of a function
2. Solve problems involving inverse functions
Target Values Intellectually Competent – able to critically analyze and solve
problems involving inverse functions
Interiority – able to assess how the concept of inverse is applicable
in reality
CONCEPT NOTES
Consider the situation below.
A sales representative needs to price a cellular phone returned by a
customer. The customer paid a total of 7, 081 pesos, which included a gift-
wrapping charge of 25 pesos and 12% sales tax. What price should the sales
representative mark the tag?
The above problem requires you to consider how the sales representative
calculated the total amount the customer has paid. That means, he or she needs to
calculate using the inverse of the process he employed when he asked for the
payment of the cellular phone. The inverse of the process used by the sales
representative is actually one of the applications of inverse relationships or
specifically, of inverse functions.
When you use your phone to call someone, you browse on your phonebook
to locate the corresponding number of that person. When caller ID appears on the
phone of that person, the phone actually performs the inverse function; it finds the
name corresponding to the number.
Inverse of a Function
The inverse of a function is the set of ordered pairs obtained by
interchanging the first and second coordinates of each point in the original
function.
Consider the relation between 𝑃 and 𝑄:
𝑃 = {(−3, 2), (0, −1), (3, −4)}
𝑄 = {(2, −3), (−1, 0), (−4, 3)}
The relation is said to be inverse of the other. Each ordered pair of 𝑃 is the
corresponding ordered pair of 𝑄, with the abscissas and ordinates interchanged.

EXAMPLE
• Find the inverse of each function.
𝑥−2
a. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 1 b. 𝑓(𝑥) =
2𝑥+3
Solution:
To find the inverse of the given relation, first, replace 𝑓(𝑥) with 𝑦. Then, interchange 𝑥
and 𝑦, and solve for 𝑦 in terms of 𝑥. Finally, replace 𝑦 with 𝑓 −1 (𝑥), the notation 𝑓 −1 (𝑥) for the
inverse of 𝑓.
a. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 1 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1 Given
𝑥 = 2𝑦 + 1 Interchange x and y.
𝑥 − 1 = 2𝑦 Solve for y.
𝑥−1

=𝑦
𝒙−𝟏
𝒇−𝟏 (𝒙) = 𝟐
Replace y with 𝑓 −1 (𝑥).
𝑥−2 𝑥−2
b. 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥+3 𝑦 = 2𝑥+3
𝑦−2
𝑥 = 2𝑦+3
𝑥(2𝑦 + 3) = 𝑦 − 2
2𝑥𝑦 + 3𝑥 = 𝑦 − 2
2𝑥𝑦 − 𝑦 = −3𝑥 − 2
𝑦(2𝑥 − 1) = −3𝑥 − 2
−3𝑥−2
𝑦= 2𝑥−1
−𝟑𝒙−𝟐
𝒇−𝟏 (𝒙) = 𝟐𝒙−𝟏

2. Write your answers in a long bond paper and attached it to the module.
LET’S TALK
You know that distance is function of speed and time. When you know the distance and
the speed, and you want to know how long it will take you to get to your destination, you use the
inverse of the aforementioned function. That is, division is the inverse of multiplication.
We use inverse functions in our daily lives all the time. We just don’t realize it because
we have already defined an inverse to be another commonly used function. But since you
already know what an inverse function is, when would you need to use the inverse of a function
in real-life? Explain your answer.

Module 8 GRAPHING INVERSE FUNCTIONS
Learning Graph inverse functions
Competency
Specific Learning
Outcomes 1. Determine the inverse of a function
2. Graph the inverse of the function
Target Values Intellectually Competent – able to analyze carefully how to graph
the inverse of the function
Passion for Truth – able to find real-life application of the graph of
inverse function especially in architect and engineering courses
CONCEPT NOTES
How to graph the inverse of a function?
In graphing inverse function, simply follow the graphing techniques used in
graphing other functions, which is to plot as many points that belong to the inverse
function and connect these points from left to right.
A basic fact that can be used as a guiding principle in graphing the inverse
of a function is this: Suppose (𝒙, 𝒚) is a point of a function. Then, (𝒚, 𝒙) is a
point of the inverse of the function.
The graph of the inverse of a function is a reflection of the graph of the
function across the line 𝑦 = 𝑥.
Suggested steps in graphing an inverse of a function:
1. Solve first for the inverse of the function using the methods from the
previous activity.
2. Use table of values to plot the points needed for the graph.
3. Graph the resulting relation.
*You can use GEOGEBRA or DESMOS GRAPHING APPS for the graph of an
inverse function.
You may also refer to your book ‘General Mathematics’ for additional information
and examples found on pages 135-146.
