ABSTRACT
Developing Emotional Intelligence for a successful and sustainable culture
INTRODUCTION: Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a person’s ability to identify, evaluate, control,
and express emotions. It helps people understand and use feelings to work through challenges,
communicate with others, and make decisions. Emotions are involved in everything we do: every
action, decision and judgement. Emotionally Intelligent people recognize this and use their
thinking to manage their emotions rather than being managed by them. Thus, EI will lead to
sustainable behavior change with a better management of ourselves and better relationships with
others.
RATIONALE JUSTIFICATION FOR THE TOPIC OF RESEARCH: In my research, I
worked in a High School where students and teachers are from different cultures and nationalities
and different religious backgrounds with predominantly African American underrepresented
population who are in the age groups of 14-18, studying grades 9-12. The vast majority of students
constantly displayed emotional instabilities due to being subject to various trauma situations or
insecurities due to a disturbance in family connections, etc. Through building positive relationships
with them by sharing commonalities, I became a cultural capital for them to be intrinsically
motivated. The group of students who continued to make positive connections with others,
developed higher levels of Emotional Intelligence with improved self-motivation and more
effective communication skills which made them more confident learners. In this research, I will
include the effective ways to develop Emotional Intelligence in students to have a successful and
sustainable culture, which in turn develop them to be productive members of their society.
CONCLUSION: Emotional Intelligence play a major role in our actions and performance.
Students who lack emotional intelligence can become less connected to school, negatively
affecting performance in the classroom. Developing Emotional Intelligence (EI) will take time,
because it impacts the overall behavior such as the way you manage yourself and the way you
manage others.
