DOLPHIN
The dolphin with its smiling face and playful habits has always been a
favourite of man. Because it lives in water, many think that the dolphins
are a kind of fish. In fact they are wrong. Dolphins are actually mammals.
They are warm-blooded animals and give birth to their young.
Dolphins do not have any gills so they breathe through their
blowholes. Therefore they come up to the surface to breathe. A young
dolphin is called a calf. It looks like its mother. It clings on to its mother for
about 18 months. As it grows, it becomes more adventurous and moves
about its own.
Dolphins do not travel alone. They always travel and live in a group.
The group is known as a school. A school of dolphin consists of about 20 to
100 dolphins. They always seem to be enjoying themselves in the group.
They are also very cautious and will protect one another from any danger.
A dolphin is in fact a very interesting mammal.
If you frequent zoos, you will also notice that dolphins are reared to
provide entertainment to patrons. Dolphins are experts at juggling balls at
the tips of their snorts just like the seals. Some dolphins allow young
children to ride on their backs. The children and adults simply love
dolphins.
