A Read the text.
Dear Amy,
Well, here we are in the U.S. On Monday, we arrived at one of the largest airports in the world.
The children were tired, but happy. Tony, my youngest child, was the most excited of the three.
We are staying with my friend Paula in a gorgeous house in one of the most expensive areas.
Paula tells me that some of the most successful public personalities live nearby!
Tom and I are looking for a house of our own. We’re finding out about the nicest neighborhoods
that are also the safest for young families. On Wednesday we saw a lovely house in Westside,
one of the best areas in the city. Unfortunately, Westside is also furthest from Tom’s work. We
thought of living in the downtown area, which is closest to the schools and Tom’s office, but I
don’t think it’s the most suitable neighborhood for families.
Paula told me that Silver Lake is one of the most popular neighborhoods and has the biggest
parks in the state. I hope we find a home there!
Love to everyone,
Jenny
B Complete the dialogues with regular, comparative, or superlative forms of the adjective.

Fran: I live 30 km away.
Ian: Oh, so you live 2 from downtown than I do.
Fran: Jack lives the 3 from the city. It takes him over an hour to get to
work every morning.
3. many / much
Sam: There are 1 parks in Lakeside than there are in Southside.
Bella: You’re right! There aren’t 2 parks in Southside.
But I think Silverton is the neighborhood with the 3 parks.
4. few
Nicky: Did you know that Southside has the 1 subway stations?
Lyn: No, I didn’t know there were so 2

Dan and Macy are trying to decide which apartment to lease. They like two apartments, but each
one has problems.
The first apartment has lots of space. It has many built-in closets, which Macy likes. Dan likes
the apartment because it has lovely wood floors. But the master bedroom isn’t big enough and the
bathroom is too small.
The second apartment has less space than the first and there are fewer closets. There is also too
much wall-to-wall carpeting and the living room isn’t roomy enough. The second apartment has
many modern utilities, but it is a little too expensive for Dan and Macy.
Dan and Macy don’t have much time. They must sign a lease and put down a deposit soon. Which
apartment do you think they will move into?
B Pam and Len are looking at an apartment. Complete their conversation with the adjective (in
brackets) + enough, or too + the adjective (in brackets).

wallpaper. It’s dark and ugly.
Len: I agree. The wallpaper is definitely 4 (dark). But we can change that.
Pam: I’m glad. The kitchen is very old-fashioned. I don’t think it’s 5
(modern) for us.
Len: You may be right. But look at this lovely big living room. It’s 6 (large)
for the whole family.
Pam: That’s another good reason to sign the lease on this apartment. Remember the great price. It’s not
7
(expensive) for us.
Len: OK. Let’s speak to the landlord. Maybe we can move in next week.

Mary’s E-MAIL
Hi Brenda,
You wanted me to tell you how to make chocolate chip cookies. Here’s what you’re going to do:
In a big bowl, you’re going to mix 1 cup of softened butter or margarine, 1 cup of white sugar,
1/2 cup of brown sugar, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla together until the mixture is creamy. Oh wait!
I forgot to tell you to preheat the oven to 190°C before you start preparing the cookies. Now you’re
going to add 2 1/4 cups of flour, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. No, that’s
wrong! I forgot the eggs. After you’ve mixed the butter, sugar, and vanilla, you’re going to beat
2 eggs and add them to the mixture. Then add the flour, salt, and baking soda. Stir the mixture well.
Next, you’re going to add 2 cups of chocolate chips and stir them into the mixture by hand. Finally,
you’re going to drop the mixture from a teaspoon onto the baking tray, keeping each teaspoonful
2 inches apart. Bake for ten minutes. Happy baking!

First Conditional
A Read the text.
Q: If I stop eating snacks, will I lose weight?
A: It depends on which snacks you eat. If you eat lots of junk food, you will gain weight. Once
you stop eating them, you will start losing weight. You can eat between meals if the snacks
are healthy. Try eating fruit and vegetables.
Q: M y daughter has gone on many diets but she doesn’t lose much weight. This affects her
badly. She just gives up. What can she do?
A: Perhaps the problem is that she isn’t exercising. If she exercises a few times a week, she
will lose weight. The moment that she starts losing weight, she will feel better about herself
and she won’t give up.
Q: M y dietician says I need to go on a diet. I am fat and I smoke. This is affecting my health.
Where should I start?
A: If you stop smoking, you will have less health problems. The first thing to do is stop
smoking. Then start cutting calories, eating healthy food, and exercising. If you don’t do all
three, your health won’t improve!

Interviewer: How would you feel if a guy you liked gave you a compliment?
Celine: I’d feel a little uncomfortable. I’d probably blush!
Interviewer: If a friend had a serious problem, would you try to help her solve it?
Celine: Yes, I would. I would listen carefully and then try to give her practical advice.
Interviewer: If you had to choose between an honest person and an intelligent person, who
would you choose?
Celine: I’d definitely choose the honest person. That’s much more important than being
smart.
Interviewer: If your director asked you to wear only a plastic bag in a movie, could you do it?
Celine: No, I couldn’t. I couldn’t perform like that! But I could drive a fast sports car if

Brian’s Blog
Sorry I haven’t written anything lately, but I’ve been busy. Let me tell you what I’ve been doing.
My girlfriend showed me that I haven’t been good to the environment. I’ve been wasting a lot of
electricity and creating lots of garbage. With her help, I’ve made very big changes.
The first thing I did was organize a car pool. Two co-workers and I drove together so we only used
one car. Then I took it one step further. Two months ago, I decided to sell my car and started riding
my bicycle everywhere. For longer rides, I take the bus. Sometimes it is inconvenient, but most of
the time, I love it. Also, I walk a lot. It’s very healthy. I feel great!
I’ve made big changes in how I shop. These days I only buy things with little or no packaging. For
instance, I used to buy packages of tomatoes from the supermarket. They were wrapped in plastic,
on a plastic tray. Now I buy fresh tomatoes from the farmer’s market. They taste much better, and
have no packaging. Also, they were grown nearby, so no gas was wasted to drive them to my city.
My girlfried, Gina, explained how important it is to buy locally grown foods, and I agree with her.
Of course, I bring my own bag to the market so I don’t use many plastic bags. I bought a really cool
bag that I can re-use and I bought one for Gina, too.
Every time I change a light bulb at home, I’ve replace it with an energy efficient light bulb. But they
don’t need changing so often because I’ve started turning off the lights when I don’t need them. My
girlfriend and I sometimes prefer candlelight. I’ve recycled paper, glass, and plastic for years, so I’m
still doing that. It’s great because then there is less garbage. I’ve gotten used to turning down the
heat in winter. I’ll try not to use the air conditioner so often in summer, but that will be difficult!
Making changes at home is easy because I live alone. I’ve also tried to make some changes at work.
That’s been a little more difficult. Most people at the office like to recycle paper, if they have a place
nearby to put it. I am trying to convince some of the people in my office to bring their own cups and
plates instead of using disposable ones, but only a few people want to do that. Well, I can’t change
the whole world!
That’s about it for today. I’ll try to write soon about other changes I’m making. But now it’s time to
turn my computer off. I never leave it on all night anymore!

The Tross Museum is proud of its latest exhibition which opened on Saturday. This amazing
collection of sculptures and paintings has already been shown in museums all over Europe. All
the works of art in the collection have been created locally by talented American artists from
forty different states. The exhibition has been seen by thousands of art lovers and it has been
written about in newspapers in Paris, London, and Florence.
Famous art critic David Jones wrote, “I haven’t been so impressed by an exhibition since the
Modern Art Exhibition at the Tate Gallery six years ago!”

The popular Fabrics Center on Main Street has recently been reopened by new owner Sara
Leeds. It’s definitely worth a visit.
During an interview Leeds explained, “Until a few years ago, most of our better wool and
cotton had been grown and manufactured in Asia or Europe. Then more and more people
began growing cotton locally. Because of this, the price of quality fabrics has been lowered
considerably. As a matter of fact, before this change occurred, good wool had been sold for
30% more than today’s price! Now we are able to sell all sorts of wonderful fabrics for cheaper
prices!”
