GEC-MMW Mathematical Language and Symbols Homework

The document contains a series of mathematical exercises that involve converting between mathematical expressions and English sentences. Specifically, it provides mathematical statements, English sentences, algebraic expressions and asks the student to convert between the different representations. The exercises cover topics like products, differences, ratios, quotients and percentages. The goal is to practice representing the same mathematical concepts in both symbolic and linguistic forms.

Exercise 1.2 – A

Convert the following mathematical statements to English sentences. Write your

answers on the space provided.

2. 3(8) = 24 –> Three times eight equals twenty-four.

3 ( 4+1 )
4. =3 -> Thrice the sum of four and one all over five is equal to three.
5

6. 3(11-5) = 18 -> Thrice the difference of eleven and five is equal to eighteen.

1
( 4+6 )
8. 2 -> Half of the sum of four and six all over five is equal to one.
=1
5

3 ( 4+1 ) −6
10. =3 -> Thrice the sum of four and one subtracted by 6 all over three is
3
equal to three.

Exercise 1.2 – B

Convert the following English sentences to mathematical statements. Write you final
answers on the space provided.

2. The sum of six and four, diminished by seven is equal to three. -> (6+4) – 7 = 3

9+5
4. The ratio of the sum of nine and five, and seven is two. -> =2
7

6. Twice the difference of ten and eight is four. -> 2(10-8) = 4

15
5
8. The quotient of “fifteen and five” and “twelve and four” is one. -> =1
12
4

10. Seventy-eight percent of one thousand less six hundred is equal to one hundred
eighty. -> (0.78 x 1000)-600 = 180
Exercise 1.2 – C

Convert the following algebraic expressions to English sentences. Write your final
answers on the spaces provided.

2. 3x = 5 – 2x -> Thrice a number equals the difference of five and twice a number.

3 ( x +1 )
4. =7 -> Thrice the sum of a number and one all over five is seven.
5

6. 11 – 3 (x-4) = 5 -> Eleven minus three multiplied by the sum of a number and four is
equal to five.

1
8. 2x-3 = ( x−3) -> The difference of twice a number and three equals half of the
2
difference of a number and three.

2x-7
10. =6 -> The difference of twice a number and seven all over the
3x-4
difference of thrice a number and four is equal to six.

Exercise 1.2 – D

Convert the English sentences to algebraic expressions. Write your answers on the
spaces provided.

2. The difference of twice a number and eleven is fifty. -> 2x-11 = 50

x
4. The quotient of a number and 2, diminished by 5 is thirteen. -> −5=13

Exercise 1.2 – E

Convert the following sentences to mathematical equations. Write your answers on the
spaces provided.

2. The product of three and a number is negative twenty-one. -> 3x = -21

4. Four times the difference of eight and a number is the same as one-hundred twenty
120
divided by twelve. -> 4(8-x) =
12

5x+10
6. Five times a number plus ten all over three is eleven. -> =11
3

8. Four times a number minus twelve is twice the difference of a number and five.
-> 4x-12 =
2(x-5)

10. The ratio of a number and seventy-five is exactly the same as fifty-four and twice a
x 54
number. -> =
75 2 x

Exercise 1.2 – E

Write the following mathematical equations in English sentences.

2. 6(12-4x) = 48 -> The product of six and the difference of twelve and four
times a number is forty-eight.

4. 4(5-x) = 16 -> Four times the difference of five and a number is sixteen.
