The Visayan Creation Myth

At the beginning of time, there were no stars, sun, land, or moon, and the word was only
water and sky above it. Maguayan was the ruler of the sky Kaptan.

Both gods had children. Lidagat, the sea, was Maguayan daughter; Lihangin, the wind,
was Kaptan’s son. Both gods agreed to the marriage of their children.

From the marriage, three boys and one were born.

- Likalibutan, who had a body of rock, saw the strongest and bravest of all.
- Liadlao, who had the body of gold, was cheerful.
- Libulan, who had a body of copper, was timid and weak,
- Lisuga, who had a body of silver, was very beautiful, gentle and sweet.

Sadly, Lihangin died leaving the control of the winds to Likalibutan. The grandparents
Maguayan and Kaptan took care of their children.

Likalibutan grew so proud of his power, yet hungered for more. So, he attacked Kaptan in
the sky with the help of his brother Ladlao and Libulan despite their scepticism.

The three brothers found the steel gate of the sky closed. Using the winds, Likalibutan
blew it away. As they headed the sky, the hungry Kaptan sent three bolts of lightning to the
brothers. Libulan’s copper body melted into a ball, Likalibutan’s rock body broke into pieces and
fell down the sea, creating lands.

While this was happening, Lisuga was worried about her siblings. Up in the sky, she went
to help her brothers. Kaptan still blinded by some anger, sent another bolt to Lisuga’s beautiful
silver body that broke into pieces.

Kaptan went down and called Maguayan, accusing him of planning the attack. Maguayan
told him of his innocence and calmed the angry Kaptan. Both gods lamented over the loss of
their grandchildren that even their powers could not bring them back to life.

Thanks to light, Ladlao became the sun, Libulan, the moon, while Lisuga’s silver pieces
turned to stars. Though Likalibutan’s body was no light, his body turned into lands in the sea and
became the home of the new race.
