Composite Functions: General Mathematics (Cor 005)

1. The document discusses composite functions and how to evaluate them. 2. A composite function is obtained by combining two simpler functions using function composition. 3. Several examples are provided to demonstrate how to find the value of a composite function by substituting inputs into the innermost function first before applying the outer function.

Composite Functions

GENERAL MATHEMATICS (COR 005)

GOALS FOR TODAY
At the end of the session, at least
80% of the students should be
able to:
1. Define function
2. Recall operations on functions
3. Solve the composite function of
the two given functions
FUNCTION
● A function is a relation in which there is exactly one
output for every input.
● A function is a relation in which each element of the
domain (x) corresponds to exactly one element of the
range (y).

Note: All functions are relations, but some relations are not functions.
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTIONS
Lesson Preview/Review
Before we start our lesson, let’s have some review. In 10 minutes, evaluate
each function by performing the desired operation on function to each item.

Given: f(x) = 3x - 1 , and g(x) = 9x2 - 1 , find the following:

a. (f + g)(2)
b. (f - g)(-1)
c. (g * f)(-2)
d. (f/g)(0)
Activity 1: What I Know Chart
In 5 minutes, fill in the first column about what do you know about the topic
based on the given questions.

WHAT I KNOW QUESTIONS WHAT I LEARNED

What is a composite
functions?

How to obtain the

composite function?

Why is composite
function important?

Exercise 1
Now, it is your turn to apply what you have
learned from the lesson. In 10 minutes,
evaluate each function. The first item has
been done as your guide. TRY THIS!!!!
Given:
f(x) = x +1 , g(x) = x - 2, , and h(x) = 4 - x2 b. (h ० g)(x)
c. (g ० f)(x)
find the following:

a. (f ० g)(x)
Solution: d. (g ० g)(x)
(f ० g)(x) = (x - 2) + 1
=x-2+1
=x-1
Therefore, (f ० g)(x) = x - 1
Exercise 2
Find a partner and solve the following Evaluate (f ० g)(-1)
functions as a team, you will be given 10
minutes for this activity. We all know that (f ० g)(x) =x2 + 4x + 4

Given: So, we have to substitute -1 to all the

f(x) = x2 + 2x + 1, g(x) = x + 1, values of x
and h(x) = x2 + 1 ; find the following:
(f ० g)(-1) = (-1)2 + 4(-1) + 4
a. (f ० g)(-1) (f ० g)(-1) = 1 + (-4) + 4
Solution: (f ० g)(-1) = 1 - 4 + 4
(f ० g)(x) = (x +1)2 + 2(x + 1)+ 1 (f ० g)(-1) = 1
= x2 + 2x + 1 + 2x + 2 + 1
= x2 + 4x + 4 Therefore. (f ० g)(-1) = 1

Therefore, (f ० g)(x) =x2 + 4x + 4

TRY THIS!!!!

b. (h ० g)(-2)
c. (f ० h)(0)
d. (g ० h)(-1)
Exercise 3 (Level Up)
In 15 minutes, evaluate each function. Write the correct answer from Column
B on the space provided before each number. Show your solutions.

Given
f(x) = -4x + 9 , g(x) = 2x - 7 , h(x) = 3x - 1

Column A Column B

____1. (f ० g)(0) A. -35

____2. (g ० g)(2) B. -40
____3. (g ० f)(-1) C. -13
____4. (f ० h)(4) D. 19
____5. (h० g)(-3) E. 37
Activity 1: What I Know Chart
Before we end the lesson, fill in the third column about what you have learned
from the topic based on the given questions. You have 5 minutes to do this.

WHAT I KNOW QUESTIONS WHAT I LEARNED

composite function?

function important?
Activity 5 (Check for Understanding)
As we end our lesson, in 5 minutes, write your answers on the space provided
based on what is being asked.
