LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEETS ON WRITING A RESEARCH TITLE

Learning Competency (MELC)

WRITES A RESEARCH TITLE

Code: CS_RS11-IIIce-2

General Directions/ Instructions

1. Do not write anything on the Learning Activity Sheet.
2. Answer your activity on a separate sheet

Key Concept:

The TITLE summarizes the main idea or ideas of your study. A good title
contains the fewest possible words needed to adequately describe the
content and/or purpose of your research paper.

Effective titles in academic research papers have several characteristics that

reflect general principles.

 Indicate accurately the subject and scope of the study,

 Rarely use abbreviations or acronyms unless they are commonly known,

 Use words that create a positive impression and stimulate reader interest,

 Use current nomenclature from the field of study,

 Identify key variables, both dependent and independent,

 Reveal how the paper will be organized,

 Suggest a relationship between variables which supports the major

hypothesis,
 Is limited to 5 to 15 substantive words,

 Does not include redundant phrasing, such as, "A Study of," "An Analysis
of" or similar constructions,
 Takes the form of a question or declarative statement,

 If you use a quote as part of the title, the source of the quote is cited
[usually using an asterisk and footnote],
 Use correct grammar and capitalization with all first words and last words
capitalized, including the first word of a subtitle. All nouns, pronouns, verbs,
adjectives, and adverbs that appear between the first and last words of the title
are also capitalized, and
 Rarely uses an exclamation mark at the end of the title.

As you craft a name for your paper, you should consider these potential objectives for
the title you choose. A title should:
1. Describe the content of the paper;
2. Distinguish the paper from others on a similar topic;
3. Catch the reader’s attention and interest;
4. Match search queries so people will find your paper (and cite it).
