Present simple Present continuous / progressive


Use: Use:
- To about routines / habits - To talk about things happing at the
moment of speaking or now
- Temporary actions
Structure: Subject + verb + complement Structure: Subj. + verb to be (am, is, are)
I / We / You / They – Verb + verb – ING + complement
Normally I – am
(+) She/He/It – S / ES He / she / it – is

He drinks coffee every day
She watches TV at night
Auxiliary verb: (-) / (?) Auxiliary verb: Am (am not); is – is not
Do – I / We / You / They (isn’t); are – are not (aren’t).

Don’t (do not) / Doesn’t (does not)
Signal words / Time markers: Every Signal words: Now; Right now: At this
day; At night; Usually; Sometimes; Never; moment; In this moment; Today; These
Hardly ever; Often; In the morning(s); etc. days; This month; Look! Listen!
Example: Example:

What is the difference in these two sentences?

- She drives her car every day – Present simple – Routine


- She is driving her car now – Present continuous – Action happening now
Examples:

- Maria doesn’t play (not / play) soccer in the morning


- Jenny and Tatiana are drinking (drink) coffee today
- Is Marcela doing (Marcela / do) her homework at this moment?
- They eat (eat) pizza on Saturdays
- Teresa sometimes reads (read) books
- We aren’t studying (not / study) French these days
- My cats don’t like (not / like) to sleep in the mornings
- Is your sister cooking (your sister / cook) pizza today?

We normally don’t use state verbs in the Present continuous form

Be; Have; Need; Understand; Love; Like; Hate; Believe etc.

Ø I am liking you
Ø I like you
Ø I have two siblings – I am having two siblings
Ø Maria doesn’t know the answer - Maria is not knowing the answer
