EARTHING SYSTEM SPECIFICATIONS
The earthing of the tower shall consist of a number of earth stations from each leg of the tower
base.
Each station consists of bare copper wire of 70mm2 exothermically welded from each base via a
copper plate toa solid copper plate 1300mm x 600mm x 5mm via bare copper wire of 70mm2.
The copper plates must be driven deep into the earth to make good contact with the virgin soil.
All the earth station at each tower base must be linked together with bare copper wire of 70mm2 buried in
the virgin soil to a earth station consisting of 2000mm long solid copper earth electrode (rod)
having a nominal diameter of not less than 12mm buried vertically in the soil at 750 mm below the
earth surface and provided with masonry chambers (300mm x 300mm x 300mm) and with
removable concrete slabs.
All connections emanating from the underground earthing system shall be PVC insulated
yellow/green.
Three tinned type solid copper earth bars of dimension 400mm x 100mm x 5 mm of various
perforations complete with isolators must be provided. Each earth bar must be connected to the
tower earthing system via 70mm2 earth wire yellow/green.
The earth bar must be installed at the first 90o degree angle of the cable tray from the top of the
tower, at the entry of the cable tray on the building and one on the building wall near the tower.
To link all our existing service to the existing Earthing system including the protection system
earthing system as detailed below for equipotential.
The maximum acceptance Overall earth resistance for the overall circuit 1. It shall be the
sole responsibility of the contractor to achieve the specified value of earth resistance and no
extra cost whatsoever shall be paid for this purpose.
TOWER LIGHTNING PROTECTION EARTHING
The lightning protection system shall be of the enhancing type designed to attract lightning and
convey the lightning current to earth.
The Lightning Protection System shall consist of a suitable air-termination ESE type, a support mast,
and Insulated down conductor and an earthing system. All the above components must be
from only one supplier specialising in the field.
The Down Conductor shall be of the shielded type to minimize the dangers of side flashing. It
shall comprise of carefully selected electric materials which create capacitive balance and
ensure insulation integrity under high impulse conditions. The primary conductor shall have a
cross section area of at least 50mm2.
The downconductor shall be secured to the structure by approved metallic fastenings at least
by 2m interval.
EARTHING of the lightning system
The earth system must not exceed 3Ω static impedance.
The earthing system must consists of three solid copper rods of 14mm diameter, 2m long
buried in the soil at an angle of 300 with each other exothermically connected to the
downconductor
The above earthing system must be connected to the tower earthing system via transient earth
clamp with an inspection pit.
All the excavation works, backfilling and tarring/concreting works must be carried out by the
successful bidder.
NOTE:
All the bare copper wire must be of 70mm2 burried at least 750mm in the soil.
All materials must of solid copper.
All materials must be from an approved supplier of earthing materials.
Installation of Earth Plates
Earth plates shall be installed in the following locations
1. Top of the cable ladder
2. Middle section of the cable ladder
3. At the intersection of the vertical and horizontal cable ladder
4. At the cable entry port of the building
