CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Leading merchandisers and shop owners malls are the main
cause of growing market these days. Super malls are commonly
present around the world. Arcade malls and strip malls are the
common type on the market . It’s about 80% of total population
of the Philippines are visiting malls around the country. And
base on INQUIRER.NET shopping malls have boost Philippines
economic growth since then.
A new idea and concept of constructing a malls around the
market. An eco-friendly park conserve less energy and attracts
more costumer because of the theme park it develop. This new
idea of theme park boost mall walk in consumer and investors.
Based on Eco-Business.com Singapore launch and open its first
eco mall and become the most visited building in their country.
A busload of visitors have been visiting Singapore’s City Square
Mall at Kitchener Road this week - not to shop for gifts to take
home, but to find new ideas for green buildings. Instead of
window shopping for the latest fashions, the visitors perused a
broad range of eco-friendly features, from passive design
features that naturally maximise lighting, air flow and shading,
to high-tech solutions that increase energy efficiency and save.
With this idea to develop Super Malls is a new challenge and new
concept in the market.
Travolator or walkator first introduced in 1893 World’s
Columbian Exposition at Chicago, Illinois in the United
States. But the first commercial moving walkway in the United
States was installed in year 1954 in Jersey City, New Jersey.
And since then walkway use in every establishment and airports
to connect various places to another.
In this thesis research we propose a Grande Mall; A 4-
storey mall with roof deck eco-park. It will be constructed at
Bypass road along Barangay Gulod, Talavera, Nueva Ecija.
Constructing a Grande Mall in this location has a lot of
potential. Because of the construction of Bypass road that are
adjoining barangay of Calipahan and in emerging commercial area
in Barangays Bacal III, Tabacao, San Ricardo, San Pascual and La
Torre, which is quite far from the existing urban area. This area
is fast growing because of its strategic location and for being
traversed by the Maharlika High Way.
As we conduct research, consumer and mall goers have been
struggling to commute.Traffic heavy jams on rush ours is also one
of the elements we consider, choosing this site is less hassle
for every consumer. And that’s we decide to choose the location
Barangay Gulod, Talavera, Nueva Ecija, Philippines.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
This research aims to propose a construction design of a
mall proving that it is a structural safe mall that will be
constructed at Barangay Gulod, Talavera, Nueva Ecija,
Philippines.
Is the proposed mall appropriate for the target customers
with regards to their demographic background?
What is the design that are prove to be structurally safe to
use in commercial establishment?
What will going to be the maintenance work to keep eco-park
clean?
1.3 Objectives of the study
The objective of this study is to develop a leading
structure that are safe to use and introduce new design and ways.
Produce more jobs and opportunities around the province of Nueva
Ecija. Boost economic growth of the Municipality.
1.4 Hypotheses
1. By the using the proper procedure of designing structural
members and following the NSCP 2015 Code, the design of
the mall is proved to be safe and convenient for people’s
use in the vicinity of Talavera.
2. Or by the using the proper procedure of designing
structural members and following the NSCP 2015 Code, the
design of the mall is proved not to be safe and
convenient for people’s use in the vicinity of Talavera.
1.5 Scope and Delimitation
This research study entitled “ Grande Mall with Roof Deck
Eco Park: A Proposed 4 Storey Building at Gulod, Talavera” only
covers the structural design and analysis of the proposed 4
Storey Mall. Structural analysis is bound by the set parameters
as per plan and followed the 2015 National Structural Code of the
Philippines. The initial data gathered were only limited to what
the city has provided and given access to the researchers.
1.6 Basic Assumptions
These are the basic assumptions we consider in the
study.
1. The proposed structure is structurally safe and passed
any test.
2. The mall can accommodate all the consumer that will
going to visit.
3. The Proposed Project will boost the Municipality’s
economy and create jobs.
4. Documents needed in the construction are properly
secured.
5. In the construction all the workers wear P.P.E and
working efficiently .
6. All materials in site will be properly inspected.
7. Project Manager will always be present in the crucial
times at the site.
1.7 Significance of the Study
This study chose to conduct the study for the following
reasons:
1. Large market population. With the continuing rise in
population in Talavera, and rise of small supermarkets,
the target population and customers of the supermall
becomes a great percentage in considering the mall
proposal.
2. Commercial Advancement. Talavera has been continuing in
advancement these past years. With the proposed mall
design, this could be a defining experiential branding
perspective for future of the Talavera.
3. Structurally Safe. Mall in its meaning has a wide stream
of customers. Given that there is always live loads and
other loads experienced by the mall, it is necessary to
conduct a structural analysis of the proposed mall.
1.8 Definition of Terms
Design - a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function
or workings of a building, garment, or other object before it is
built or made.
Eco Park- a short form of Ecological Park. It is exploited as an
amusement park without hampering its natural environment so that
the bio-diversity remains unaffected there.
NSCP- National Structural Code of the Philippines
Roof Deck - In architecture, a deck is a flat surface capable of
supporting weight, similar to a floor, but typically constructed
outdoors, often elevated from the ground, and usually connected
to a building. The term is a generalization of decks as found on
ships.
Structural Analysis - is the determination of the effects of
loads on physical structures and their
components. Structures subject to this type of analysis include
all that must withstand loads, such as buildings, bridges,
aircraft and ships.
Structural Design - is the methodical investigation of the
stability, strength and rigidity of structures. The basic
objective in structural analysis and design is to produce
a structure capable of resisting all applied loads without
failure during its intended life.
Super Malls - a very large building or buildings containing a lot
of stores and restaurants, usually with space outside for
parking. A shopping mall is no longer just a place to go to buy
something, it’s a community and entertainment center.
Travolator or Walkator – A moving walkway; a slow conveyor belt
that transport people horizontally or on an incline in a similar
manner to an escalator.
