The mullions are provided in external and internal masonry walls. The masonry walls are considered as infill wall which are not
taking part of transferring the dead load, live load and seismic load. To design the wall panel size, mullions and their connections , the
design philosophy is adapted based on the following.
The maximum spacing of mullion is calculated as per the calculation adequate size of wall panels. The step wise procedure for
design of adequate wall panel size, spacing of mullions and mullion connections with floor slab/beam are explained below.
Internal Walls usually subjected to much smaller lateral forces. In a view of smaller lateral loads, these walls can be apportioned
empirically as per cl. D-3.1
The Thickness of the internal walls considered for the design are 100/115/125/150/200/230/250 mm.
The external walls are divided in 2 categories.
1. Type -1 - Internal Walls without continuous Lintels
2. Type -2 - Internal Walls with continuous Lintels
The top of the masonry wall is considered as free edge and other three edges of the wall are considered as pinned . The maximum
length of the wall panel can be empirically determined by Cl. D- 3. 1 - (a)
There are three sub clauses of clause D-3.1-(a) , All the three clauses shall be satisfied and the output of one (among three), which is
governing, shall be adopted.
As such, there is no specific design for Mullion. Nominal width of 200mm is adopted. Depth shall match with the thickness of the
wall.
This calculation is valid only for external walls of type-2, where continuous lintels are provided. The maximum opening size below
lintel and span of the lintel is considered to be 1.2m. Reinforcement details of the lintels are synchronised with the standard drawing of
Lintel for 1.2m opening width. (EDRC-C-STD-LT-NR-0001)
As such, there is no specific design, shear dowels with nominal diameter 10 mm is provided.

TYPICAL DETAILED DESIGN CALCULCATION INTERNAL WALL PANEL
TITLE
(AS PER CLAUSE D-3.1-(a)-1) PDH PRKR NRM 13 of 20
The design of Internal Partition walls has been done using Clause No. D - 3.1 - (a) - "Partition Walls" (Appendix D) - IS 1905 :
1987.
Internal Walls usually subjected to much smaller lateral forces. In a view of smaller lateral loads, these walls can be
apportioned empirically as per cl. D-3.1
Support Condition for wall panel is considered as Pinned at three ends and Free at top, Which matches with the subclause (a)
of D-3.1.
D - 3.1 - (a) "Walls with adequate lateral restraint at both ends but not at the top"
Length of Internal Partition walls with given support condition can be calculated emprically by any one of the three conditions
based on the requirements.
The Panel may be of any height, provided the length does not exceed 40 times the thickness
So,
Maximum Length Lw(max) < 40 x 125

D - 3.1 - (a) "Walls with adequate lateral restraint at both ends but not at the top"
Length of Internal Partition walls with given support condition can be calculated emprically by any one of the three conditions
based on the requirements.
If the wall elevation is Type -1, Clear height of the wall will be taken for the calculations, but if the wall elevation is Type -2,
Maximum Height of the wall will be taken from height of the wall above lintel and height of wall below lintel, as that height
will be critical
Maximum Spacing of Mullions is calculated for the maximum clear storety height of the range selected. i.e. for example, for
the height range 'above 2.85m upto 4.00 m, height 4.00 m is considered for the calculation of maximum spacing of Mullions
Where the length of the panel is over 40 times and less than 60 times the thickness, the height plus twice the length may not
exceed 135 times the thickness
Height of the Wall (Hm) + [2 x Length of Wall (Lw (max))] < 135 x Thickness of the wall
So,
2100+ 2 x Lw (max) < 135 x 225
