EXPERIMENT No. 9
OBJECTIVES:
1. To study IC 7490.
2. To design of mod-2, mod-5, mod-7 and mod-10 counter using IC 7490
APPARATUS:
1. Bread Board.
2. IC 7490
3. Connecting wires etc.
PRE-REQUISITES:
1. Knowledge of operation of counter
2. Knowledge of pin functions of IC 7490
THEORY:
Counters are the circuits, which counts the state. They are among the most
important part of digital world. There are two types of counters.
1) Synchronous counters.
2) Asynchronous counters.
In the case of synchronous counter all the flip-flops are clocked simultaneously
where as in case of an asynchronous counter all flip-flops are not clocked simultaneously.
In IC 7490, there are four flip-flops, they are so connected that they form two
counters. One MOD by 2 and other MOD by 5 for MOD 2 one flip-flop is sufficient and for
MOD 5 other 3 flip-flops are used. Figure (1) explains pin diagram of IC 7490.
MOD 2 Operation :
The block diagram for this is shown in figure (2) Table (1) gives the truth table.
This counts only two states. Hence the name MOD 2 counter.
Clock QA Count
0 0
1 1
For this operation, pins Ro (1) Ro (2) ( i.e. reset ) and Rg (1), Rg (2) ( i.e. reset ) are connected
to ground and clock pulse is given to pin 14 the output is taken pin number 12.
MOD 5 Operation :-
Figure (3) explains the block diagram for MOD 5 counter table (2) give truth
table. This counter counts five states hence the MOD 5 counter.
For this clock pulse is given to pin No.1 and output is taken from pin numbers
9,8 and 11, with LSB as pin number 9 and MSB as pin number 11.
MOD 10 Operation (BCD COUNTER): -
The IC 7490 is connected such that it counts 10 states sequentially hence the
name MOD 10 counter or BCD counter. Figure (4) explains the block diagram of MOD 10
operation whereas table (3) give its truth table.
For IC 7490 to perform operation as (BCD Counter) MOD 10 counter the
output of MOD 2 counter is given to input of MOD 5 counter. I.e. pin number 12 and pin
number 1 are shorted. Here LSB is QA and MSB is QD.
MOD 7 Operation: -
The IC 7490 is connected such that it can count only seven states i.e. from 0 to 6
of MOD 7 operation and table (5) gives its truth table. The clock pulse will be given to input
B and it will connect to pin number 12. The output of AND gate is given to pin number 2 and
3, which are shorted. The AND gate is used in the form of IC 7411, triple 3-input AND gate.
CONCLUSION:
Thus we studied the counters using IC 7490.
QUESTIONS:
1. What are different types of counters ?
2. What is difference between asynchronous and synchronous counter? Which
one is faster?
3. Take IC 7490. Short QD and input A. Apply pulses at input B. Write down the
sequence of count. Draw timing diagram.
