1. INTRODUCTION
On S20 engines exhaust valve seats are water cooled. Since valve seat and cylinder head, together
with the cooling water, create a galvanic cell, a protection against undesired galvanic corrosion is
necessary. For this reason, on the initial design the bore for the exhaust valve seat in the cylinder
head was nickel plated. Experience has shown that unfavourable service conditions, as for example
insufficient cooling water treatment, combined with a possible insufficient bonding of the nickel layer,
can cause the latter to flake off and galvanic corrosion and water leakage can occur.
This Technical Bulletin should be kept in a separate file in the control room. The respective
pages or tables of the Technical Bulletin with modifications to the Operating Manual,
Maintenance Manual or Code Book should be copied and filed in the respective Manual or
Book.

2. INSERT BUSH FOR EXHAUST VALVE SEAT BORE
In order to retain the separation between cylinder head and exhaust valve seat by other means, an
insert bush (code 2703/ A120) has been introduced. For new engines this alteration is standard,
cylinder heads with flaking off nickel layer should be modified accordingly.

3. ADDITIONAL MACHINING ON THE CYLINDER HEAD
The modification on the exhaust valve seat bores of existing cylinder heads is to be carried out
according to the following drawing:
4. FITTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE INSERT BUSH
1 Check surface of bore in cylinder head for axial scratches. Axial scratches are not permitted
2 Check outside and inside diameter of bush and bore in the cylinder head. The cylindricity and
ovality should not exceed 0.02 mm.
Important: For easier fitting, the leading edge of the bush must be chamfered.
3 Before fitting the bush, the bore in the cylinder head must be free of dirt and grease.
4 Apply Loctite 648 in the bore (see sketch overleaf).
5 Bush to be cooled down to –190°C with liquid nitrogen. The correct bush temperature is reached
after the liquid nitrogen has stopped bubbling.
6 Carefully mount the bush into the cylinder head.
Note: The bush must slide into the bore without additional force. Remove bush again immediately
in case a resistance is felt before the bush has reached the final, correct position.
7 Align bore in bush with the cooling bore in the cylinder head.
8 Press bush in bore and keep it in position until expansion of bush has been completed.
9 If possible start with mounting of the valve seat after about 12 hours (curing time for Loctite)
10 Prior to fitting the valve seat, the bore has to be cleaned from any Loctite squeezed between
bush and bore.

5. OVERSIZE BUSH FOR BORES WITH NOTCHES OR SCRATCH MARKS
For bores showing some notches or scratch marks after pulling out of the old bushes, an oversize
bush is available. The bore in the cylinder head can be machined out to remove the damage done by
the old bush during fitting and extracting.

The standard insert bush (code 2703 / A 120) as well as the oversize repair bush are obtainable
through our Network Companies or directly from Wärtsilä Netherlands B.V.

6. FITTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXHAUST VALVE SEAT
In order to avoid any misunderstanding, we would like to emphasize, that the exhaust valve seat
must not be cooled down at all. As the O-ring gets brittle at low temperatures, it can be damaged
whilst fitting the seat.
According to the instructions given in the Maintenance Manual group 2750/3.2 the exhaust valve seat
has to be cleaned, degreased and Loctite No. 648 should be applied only at the surfaces as shown in
the sketch below. For proper fitting, use the tool No. W 27.009 . The whole fitting procedure takes
place at normal room temperature.
Important: No Loctite should be applied to the shoulder “S” of the bore.
Note: Contrary to the exhaust valve seat the inlet valve seat has to be cooled down prior to fitting
(see Maintenance Manual group 2750/3.1).
