Thermodynamics Problem Set Solutions

The document provides data from a gas thermometer experiment where the pressure (P) of a gas was measured at an unknown temperature (T) and at the triple point of water (PTP). The data is plotted with PTP on the x-axis and the calculated temperature T on the y-axis. A least squares fit line is applied to the data, with the equation shown. The intercept of the line equals the extrapolated temperature T when PTP is 0, found to be 348.35 K. Converting to Celsius, the unknown temperature is determined to be 75.20 °C.

PHYS-4420 THERMODYNAMICS & STATISTICAL MECHANICS SPRING 2006

Class Activity - Class 1 January 17, 2006

Name____Solution______________________

Do problem 1-6 from the textbook. Since many of you do not have the textbook with you, here it
is:

The following table gives the observed values of the pressure P of a gas in a constant-volume gas
thermometer at an unknown temperature T and at the triple point of water, as the mass of the gas
is reduced

Since, T (K)  273.16 Plim it is possible to calculate the value of T(K) for each value of

PTP and extrapolate a plot of T(K) as a function of PTP to PTP = 0. That is easy to do with Excel.
The data and the graph are shown, and the program put a “least squares” straight line fit through
the points. The equation of the line is shown on the graph, so the intercept equals the
extrapolated temperature.
