EXTERNADO CARO Y CUERVO

GRADE A1-1
Grading Exam
PROFESSOR: Fredy Alejandro Martínez Aguilar.
2020
ST
1 TERM
Name: ___________________________________________ SCORE: ________

Welcome to this English program. Here, we are going to watch new concepts in which we
are learning English strategies to know how to communicate well with other people.
Please read carefully all the information here to identify what you have to do; you will find
topics with grammar explanations, briefly, to be upgraded to the class.

1. Present Simple
The Present Simple is used for mentioning routines and general actions that we
say in a daily routine. For example, <<I read a book every month>>...

It is important to know we have to recognize the subject for the actioner of the sentences
(That subject, who does the action):

Person Subject

1st I (‘Yo’, the person who talks)

Person

You (‘Tú’, the person who is in front of the actioner)

2nd We (‘Nosotros’, you and I)

Person
They (‘Ellos’, Not you, not me)

He (‘Él’, a boy, a man)

3rd Person She (‘Ella’, a girl, a lady a woman)

It (‘Eso’, an object, a place, a situation, an animal; something that is not a

person).

Also, it is important to know that each subject goes with a verb. Here, we say that the
subject is in a place or the subject is something:
Person Subject Verb to be
(Ser/Estar)

1st I (‘Yo’, the person who talks) am

Person

You (‘Tú’, the person who is in front of the actioner)

We (‘Nosotros’, you and I)

2nd They (‘Ellos’, Not you, not me) are

Person

He (‘Él’, a boy, a man)

She (‘Ella’, a girl, a lady a woman)

3rd It (‘Eso’, an object, a place, a situation, an animal; is

Person something that is not a person).

Now complete the sentences by adding the correct verb to be for each sentence:
 He ___ in the school.
 She ___ my teacher.
 They ____ the students.
 It ___ my car.
 I ___ your partner.
 The students ____ working in the computer.
 My class ______ is located to the corner of the institution.
 My friends ____ opening the windows because it ___ too cold.
 Charlie and Bryan ____ my best friends since I was a child.
 Marcos, Lorena, and the auditorium _____ so excited due to the concert.

Also, if we want to say a negative sentence, we add a ‘not’ after the verb to be:
 I am not your coach.
 She is not my sister.
 We are not the visitors.
Then, you can create a contraction adding an apostrophe ( ‘ ) to link the subject with the
verb to be:
I am = I’m
You are = You’re
We are = We’re
They are = They’re
He is = He’s
She is = She’s
It is = It’s

So, you can say the same action with the contractions:
 I am your coach… I’m your coach.
 She is my sister… She’s my sister.
 We are the visitors… We’re the visitors.
Or, you can make the contraction with the verb to be and the negatives:
 I’m not your coach.
 She isn’t my sister.
 We aren’t the visitors.

Activity
Organize the words and create a sentence by using the correct form of each person:
1. You/(Verb to be)/in/bathroom/the.
2. They/(Verb to be)/the/in/school.
3. I/(Verb to be)/in the park.
4. Rose/(Verb to be)/crossing the park.
5. Suzy/(Vwerb to be)/calling to her mom.

Be careful with the 3rd Person, because we have to conjugate the verbs ONLY with the
third person when we use action verbs (action verbs are words that express and action,
such as jump, run, watch, study, go, etc...):

I jump so high.
You jump so high.
She jumps so high.

I study English.
We study English.
He studies English. (Notice here we have to omit the ‘y’, erase it and put the letters ‘ies’
only if before the ‘y’ there is a consonant. If before the ‘y’ we have a vowel we just put an
‘s’ after the verb).

For example:
I play soccer.
You play soccer.
She plays soccer.

Activity
A. Complete the paragraph using the correct form of the verbs. You are given the words in
base form in parenthesis.

Dear mom,
I ______ (want) to tell you how much I _____(love) you. This letter ___ (be) to express the
happiness I ____ (feel) when I say I ___ (am) your son. I ____ (feel) proud when someone
asks me: Hey, why do you love her? … And I answer: Because, she ___ (is) my life. She
____ (love) me a lot and she _____ (want) he bes for me.

Thank you for everything.
Love. Gabriel

coherence to the complete text:
Today, Stephen _________(return) from a trip to Washington, D.C., the capital of the
United States. His _________(visit) ______ (take) place during the week prior to the

______________________(commemorate) the contributions that these leaders
______________ (make) throughout American history. Washington, D.C. also has several
war memorials dedicated to fallen soldiers during the major wars of the 20th century.

2. Present Continuous
The Present Continuous is for telling an action you do in the present, in the moment. You
have to use the Subject + Verb to be + Verb with ‘ing’ + complement. Here, the ing form
gives the (ando, endo, indo; In Spanish)... But, it works only if there is a verb to be before
the verb with ‘ing’.

For example,

1. I am running in the park with my friends.

2. You are eating a hamburger.
3. She is studying French in a Language Centre.
