Introduction

1 Introduction

This document describes how to install the Remote Radio Unit multi-Standard
(RRUS) A2 on site, and how to connect it to external interfaces. Standing alone
RRUS A2 unit installation and RRUS A2 associated with an Remote Radio
Unit (RRU) installation are described within this document. Instructions for
installing the RRU can be found in Installing Remote Radio Unit, instructions
for installing the main unit or the RBS can be found in Installing RBS, and

instructions for installing the optical cables can be found in Installing Optical
Cables for Main-Remote Solutions.

A2.

An overview of the RRUS A2 can be found in Remote Radio Unit Description.

The instructions in this document describe the installation, or use, of the

2.4 Conditions
The conditions in this section must be fulfilled before work starts.

2.4.1 Before Going to the Site

Before going to site, make sure the following:

• Site access permission has been received.

• Documentation stated in Section 2.1 on page 5 is available.

• All tools stated in Table 2 are available.

Before starting the installation, ensure the following:

The site is prepared in accordance with the Site Installation Documentation.

Ordered hardware is available.

• The power supply (-48 V DC) for the RRUS A2 is installed and tested at
the site.

• Site grounding is installed and tested.

• For protection of the RRUS A2, one of the following alternatives must be
installed and tested:

− A main switch and an external fuse

• The antenna system is installed and tested.

This section provides instructions for handling the RRUS A2.

4.1 Lifting the RRUS A2

4.2 Resting the RRUS A2


Always rest the RRUS A2 standing upright on a flat surface, protecting the
connectors, as shown in Figure 5.

4.3 Hoisting the RRUS A2

To hoist the RRUS A2, perform the following procedure:

1. Attach a lifting device to the top of the pole or wall, where the RRUS A2 is
to be attached to.

2. Pull a rope through the block on the lifting device and attach the end of
the rope to the handle of the RRUS A2 or its associated RRU. This rope is
for lifting the main unit.

Attach another rope to the bottom part of the RRUS A2 or its associated RRU.
This rope is for guiding the RRUS A2 to prevent it from bumping into the pole,
wall, or other units.

Hoist the RRUS A2 up to its position on the pole or wall while guiding the RRUS
A2 using the lower rope, as shown in the following illustrations.

Unpacking and Checking the Materials

5 Unpacking and Checking the Materials

This section provides instructions for unpacking and checking material.

The RRUS A2 is transported in a box.

To unpack and check the materials, perform the following procedure:

1. Examine the packaging for damage. If it has been damaged, immediately
register a complaint with the transport company. It is recommended that a

photo of the damages be taken to improve the claims process.

Note: Use the packaging for any return units. More information can be

found in Handling Faulty Equipment.

2. Check that the items delivered correspond to the packing list. More

information can be found in the Site Installation Documentation.

3. Dispose of the box in accordance with local regulations or Ericsson


recommendations.

Note: The RRUS A2 must not be left in an outdoor environment more than
one week prior to taking it into service. In cases where high humidity or
cold temperatures applies, the RRUS A2 must be taken into service
within 48 hours.

6 Preparing for Installation

This section provides information for preparations before installing the RRUS
A2.

6.1 Attaching an RRUS A2 Front Solar Shield

Y
Note: This section is available for standing alone RRUS A2 installation. If the
RRUS A2 has an associated RRU, the front solar shield is not needed.

Continue the installation in Section 6.2 on page 20.

To attach the RRUS A2 front solar shield, perform the following procedure:

1. Attach the four brackets to the RRUS A2 by inserting four screws on it.
Tighten the screws to a torque of 2.5 Nm by using a T20 Torx screwdriver.

2. Attach the front solar shield by pushing it onto the RRUS A2 until it fits into
position and then sliding it down until it snaps into closed position.

6.2 Attaching an RRUS A2 to an RRU


To attach the RRUS A2 to an RRU, perform the following procedure:

1. Fit the RRUS A2 into position on the back of the RRU, then install the
upper mounting brackets.

2. Tighten the two M10 nuts on the upper mounting bracket and the two
lower M10 nuts to a torque of 41 Nm, using a torque wrench fitted with a 16

6.3 Installing the SFP

To install the SFP on the RRUS A2, perform the following procedure:

1. Remove the cap of the bulkhead connector at position marked 1.

7 Installing the Mounting Brackets

This section provides instructions for installing the mounting brackets on the
RRUS A2.

Note: The front solar shield can be damaged. It is therefore recommended


to install the mounting brackets, or bolts, while the RRUS A2 is in the
transportation box on the packaging material or standing upright.

There are several installation options for the RRUS A2 as shown in Figure 6.

Select one of the following alternatives and perform the procedures in the
section indicated:

Section 7.1 on page 25.

RRUS A2 for a single unit wall installation.

1. When installing the RRUS A2 using a single pole installation kit, install the
upper mounting bracket on the back of the RRUS A2 handle.

using a torque wrench fitted with a 16 mm socket.

3. Put the two M10 bolts in the holes on the bottom of the RRUS A2 and
fasten them by hand, leaving 15 mm of the bolt pointing out from the RRUS A2.

This section provides instructions for installing the mounting brackets on the
RRUS A2 for a triple unit pole installation.

upper bracket and the triple mounting spacer on the back of the RRUS A2.

of 41 Nm, using a torque wrench fitted with a 16 mm socket.

8 Installing the RRUS A2

This section provides instructions for installing the RRUS A2. For more
information on space requirements, refer to Remote Radio Unit Description.

There are several installation options for the RRUS A2 as shown in Figure 6.

Select one of the following alternatives and perform the procedures in the

Section 8.1 on page 32.

8.1 Single Unit Pole Installation


This section describes how to install the RRUS A2 on a pole using a single
unit pole installation kit.

The supported pole dimensions are presented in Table 3, Section 2.3 on page 8.

Warning!

Risk for falling objects, work at height in progress. Falling objects can cause
serious injury or even be fatal. Always wear a helmet and avoid standing in
the danger area.

Note: Ensure that all the bolts and nuts are lubricated.

Do not use graphite-containing lubricants since they promote corrosion


and can damage cable insulation.

To install the RRUS A2, preform the following:

1. Install the upper pole clamp in the desired position on the pole. Fasten the
washers and nuts to the clamp bolts and finger tighten. Adjust the pole clamp
so that the clamp bolts run parallel on each side of the pole.

Tighten the two M10 nuts to a torque of 41 Nm, using a torque wrench fitted
with a 16 mm socket.

4. Hook the RRUS A2 onto the upper pole clamp. Move the upper part of the
RRUS A2 10 mm to the right so that the bolts on the upper pole clamp fit into

the narrow part of the holes on the upper bracket on the RRUS A2. Finger
tighten the bolts.

5. Close the lower pole clamp around the pole and finger tighten the nuts.
Adjust the pole clamp so that the clamp bolts run parallel on each side of the

8.2 Single Unit Wall Installation


This section describes how to install the RRUS A2 on a wall using a single
unit wall installation kit.

Do not use graphite-containing lubricants since they promote corrosion


and can damage cable insulation.

Note: Wear protective equipment when drilling.

To install the RRUS A2, preform the following:

1. Mark up and drill the holes in the wall using the following illustration for
hole position.

Fit the depth restrictor to the hammer drill to regulate the depth of each hole.

2. Insert plugs or expander bolts into each hole.

3. Position the upper and the lower bracket over the drilled holes and insert
the bolts. Tighten them according to the recommendations given by the site
engineering department.

4. Hoist the RRUS A2 as described in Section 4.3 on page 14.

5. Position the RRUS A2 correctly by aligning the mounting brackets onto


the bolts on the wall brackets.

6. Hook the RRUS A2 onto the upper wall bracket. Push the lower part of the
RRUS A2 towards the wall so that the bolts on the lower mounting bracket on
the RRUS A2 fit into the U-forms on the lower wall bracket. Move the upper
part of the RRUS A2 10 mm to the right so that the bolts on the upper wall
bracket fit into the narrow part of the holes on the upper bracket on the RRUS
A2. Finger tighten the bolts.

8.3 Triple Unit Pole Installation


This section describes how to install the RRUS A2 on a pole using a triple
unit pole installation kit.

The supported pole dimensions are presented in Table 3, Section 2.3 on page 8.

8.4 Grounding the RRUS A2

1. Route the ground cable from the site grounding system to the RRUS A2

8.5 Connecting the RF Cables


To connect the RF cable directly to the RRUS A2 antenna interface, perform

wrench fitted with a 32 mm socket.

8.7 Connecting the Optical Cables


This section provides the procedure for connecting the optical cable to the
RRUS A2.

Instructions for installation of the optical cable can be found in Installing Optical
Cables for Main-Remote Solutions. The cables are fiber optic and must be

handled with care. Never touch the end-face of the optical connectors. Only
remove protective covers right before installation.

Note: Be careful if the installation requires pulling the cables. The minimum
allowed bending radius for the optical cable provided by Ericsson is
40 mm and the minimum allowed bending radius for each individual
fiber is 15 mm. The minimum bending cables for other cables can be
found in the manufacturer's specifications. Do not twist the fiber to the
minimum bending radius.

8.7.1 Hoisting the Optical Cable

To hoist the optical cable to a pole or a wall, perform the following procedure:

Under exceptional conditions, the RRUS A2 may be installed hanging
horizontally with the front facing downwards.

Bracket 1 and the triple spacer as Bracket 2, as shown in Figure 9.

software. Optical indicators show the status of the RRUS A2.

10.3.2.1 Checking RRUS A2 Optical Indicator Status

The optical indicators show the status of the RRUS A2 and the optical cable. In
addition to the general optical indicators, the RRUS A2 is equipped with two
green optical indicators that show the status of the SFP 1 and optical cable 1 as
well as the SFP 2 and optical cable 2.

Use the checklist in Table 8 to check that the RRUS A2's operation, information,
maintenance, SFP 1, and optical cable 1, as well as SFP 2, and optical cable 2
optical indicators are on or blinking and that all fault optical indicators are off.

Before leaving the site, perform the following procedure:

1. Clean the site and remove objects such as wrapping paper and cable
clippings.

3. Fill in the verification checklist in the Site Installation Documentation.

4. Report any faults in accordance with local requirements.

5. Hand over the Site Installation Documentation to the person responsible
for the site.

6. Lock all doors and gates to the site.

Ericsson strongly recommends that installers pay particular attention to the
environment when cleaning the site after RBS installation, in particular, recycle
all waste that can be recycled and sort the rest so that it can be disposed in
accordance with local regulations. Use the checklist in Table 9 to recycle and
