Business Case Writing

Business case writing can be primary data base and secondary data case. In primary data
base, we take interviews of the concerned person, the CEO, the owner, The Managing
Director etc. on the basis of the interview pus the secondary data base we have, the case is
written. (pls record the interview so that it may be used for retrieving information while you
write the case).
Secondary data case is written on the basis of secondary data which is available on
newspapers, journals, magazines, company websites, books, blogs or internet.
However, for both type of cases, the structure of the case will be the same. In both types, you
have to identify a protagonist, the one who is the decision maker for that matter or dilemma
which you will highlight in the case. Please make the narration lively , having a case story
and even add quotations of the concerned person.
1. Opening para – Protagonist, Company Name, Time
Start the first para with the protagonist and his team discussing a business problem or
a dilemma faced by their company which is specific to their company itself.
Enumerate this dilemma situation in a question form. The dilemma may be
concerning the growth & expansion/ marketing and pricing / financial/ Human
resource related/ operation management/ brand management etc. related.
(Throughout the case viewpoints/ comments etc of the protagonist or any other key
persons can be quoted with the quotation marks.)
2. Historical Background: getting the idea, vision and mission, start-up phase, key
persons, work life balance challenges faced and strategies adopted to overcome, key
milestones
3. Research about the industry:

5. Key Activities of the company:

6. Organisational structure: Hierarchy and management

7. Key strategies- Marketing, HR

8. Operations and implementations:

9. Sustainability factors: (fund raising and financial management): (Also, Data of


finance and financial planning)
10. COVID/lockdown related impact on the company and the strategies to be adopted in
Post COVID/lockdown

11. Come back to the problem / dilemma discussed in first para.

 Discuss in detail the alternatives available before the company and pros and cons
of all the alternatives.
 Determine and discuss specific strategies for accomplishing the proposed solution.
 If applicable, recommend further action to resolve some of the issues.
 What should be done and who should do it?

Key questions to be asked from the protagonist


 Story to launch this organisation- Idea development/ motivation
 Who are the major supporters of this initiatives?
 How did they get motivation to go ahead?
 How they manage the financials, funding, govt credit, grants etc?
 Any experience with extremely difficult situation in life span of company?
 What kind of value additions in the activity profile they did over the years? (A table
can be made)
 What is unique about their activity model and operations?
 The mistakes done
 What did they learn over the years and how these learning have created an impact on
the refinements of activity/delivery?
 What is the end target? And planning to achieve it?
 What are the best success cases?
 How they audit their own performances? 
 How they decide roles and responsibilities in the organisation?

 Patents / Copyrights
