ME681A: Assignment 6 (Based On Week 10 Lectures) : Due On 15th Nov. 2020

This document contains 6 questions related to solving differential equations using power series and Laplace transform methods. Question 1 asks to find the power series solution to an ODE that satisfies initial conditions. Question 2 involves computing power series solutions to the Chebyshev equation and showing it has polynomial solutions. Question 3 asks to find the indicial polynomial and power series solution for another ODE. Question 4 does similarly for the Laguerre equation. Questions 5 and 6 involve obtaining solutions near t=0 for other ODEs or solving initial value problems using Laplace transforms.

ME681A: Assignment 6 (based on Week 10 lectures)

Due on 15th Nov. 2020

Question 1. Find the solution of y 00 +(t−1)2 y 0 −(t−1)y = 0 in the form y(t) = k=0 ck (t−
1)k , which satisfies y(1) = 1 and y 0 (1) = 0.

Question 2. The equation (1 − t2 )y 00 − ty 0 + α2 y = 0, where α is a constant, is called the

Chebyshev equation.
(a) Compute two linearly independent series solutions for |t| < 1.
(b) Show that for every non-negative integer α = n there is a polynomial solution of
degree n. When appropriately normalized these are called the Chebyshev polynomials.

Question 3. Consider the equation t2 y 00 + tet y 0 + y = 0.

(a) Compute the indicial polynomial and find the roots.
(b) Compute the coefficients c1 , c2 , c3 in the solution y(t) = tr ∞ k
P
k=0 ck t , where c0 = 1.

Question 4. The equation ty 00 + (1 − t)y 0 + αy = 0, where α is a constant, is called the

Laguerre equation.
(a) Show that this equation has a regular singular point at t = 0.
(b) Compute the indicial polynomial andPits roots.
(c) Find a solution of the form y(t) = tr ∞ k
k=0 ck t .
(d) Show that for every non-negative integer α = n there is a polynomial solution of
degree n.

Question 5. Obtain two linearly independent solution of the following equations which are
valid near t = 0:
(a) t2 y 00 + 3ty 0 + (1 + t)y = 0.
(b) t2 y 00 + 2t2 y 0 − 2y = 0.

Question 6. Solve the following IVPs using the Laplace transform method:
(a) y 00 − 4y 0 + 4y = 4e2t , y(0) = −1, y 0 (0) − 4.
(b) y 00 + 2y 0 + y = 9e2t , y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 0.
(c) y 00 + 5y 0 + 6y = δ(t − π/2) + H(t − π) cos t, y(0) = 0, y 0 (0) = 0.
