CEB3023 Process Safety and Loss Prevention May 2020: Self-Reflection

The document is a self-reflection by a student on their learning in the course CEB3023 Process Safety and Loss Prevention. The student learned about process safety issues like fires, explosions and toxic releases. They found chapters on source models, dispersion models, and some equations difficult. However, pop quizzes and lab sessions using software like PHAST and SAFETI helped apply concepts. Moving forward, the student hopes to apply their knowledge during an internship. They realized the importance of process safety and would like to evaluate hazards and risks. Online exams and tutorials were less effective for the student, so they plan to take better notes and review topics regularly.

Process Safety and Loss Prevention

May 2020
Self-Reflection

By Kueh Zhi Yi 16004438

1. What have you learned throughout the course?

I am Kueh Zhi Yi, 3rd year Chemical Engineering student who have taken CEB 3023
Process Safety and Loss Prevention for semester May 2020 under Dr Azizul Buang. I have
learned all the process safety issues mainly focusing on fire, explosions and toxic release
throughout these 12 weeks lecture, tutorial and lab session. In Chapter 1, I have understood
the meaning of process safety difference of process safety and occupational safety in term of
applicability and risk matrix profile. Besides, I am also able to clearly understand and justify
the incident sequence for different hazards. In chapter 2. I can easily identify and relate the
standards and regulations’ requirements with the application of process safety fundamental to
prevent losses and accidents after attend the lecture session. In Chapter 3, I have exposed to
dose response principle with the help of probit analysis. In chapter 4, I able to quantify the
incident thermal radiation as well as understand the flammability principle to control ignition
source, fuel concentration range and oxygen content.

Meanwhile, in chapter 5, I learnt how to identify the type of explosions either

deflagrations or detonations after going through the lesson. In chapter 6 and 7, I have
managed to quantify the materials being released during the accidents by using source models
by taking into considerations whether it is vapour discharge, liquid discharge through hole or
through hole in a tank, flashing liquids and liquid pool evaporating or boiling. In chapter 8, I
have fully understood the utility of process hazards checklist, dow indexes and HAZOP for
hazard identification. In a nutshell, I felt chapter 3, 6, 7 and 10 some parts are quite difficult
to understand because it came along with many equations but luckily all the lecture video are
uploaded in ulearn for us to reflash back.

2. Did you find anything difficult?

The thing that I found difficult is the visualization of the potential hazards in any
process or industry. This is mostly because we hardly imagine how dangerous incident
happened in a workplace due to the lack of hands on experience in lab session and actual site
visit. Besides, I also experienced some difficulties especially in the chapter source models
and dispersion models because most of the questions in these topics provide hidden
information that required some self-understanding and assumption. When doing my revision
for test 2, I quite confusing with the condition such as class, weather, wind speed as these
things are based on our assumption and understanding to question. It is quite difference with
previous chapter that have some kind of ‘rule’ to follow and which equation to use.

3. Has it made you think about what you would or wouldn't like to do in the future?

Personally, I am shocked by the complication and risk of any potential hazards that
might be taken placed in any process after being introduced to Process Safety and Loss
Prevention. At first, I thought that process safety only focusing on the precaution taken by an
individual to avoid accidents. However, I have realized that the whole aim of this course is
identify and assess possible hazards or risk while undergoing any process in order to ensure
required engineering or operational measures to mitigate loss after completing the whole
course. Overall, this course has provided me an opportunity imagine the incident that could
happen in the workplace or industry and what precaution can be made. Other than that, my
internship’s job scope is mainly focus on process feasibility study and update of process
safety management procedure so I hope I could apply the knowledge that I have learned in
this course during my 7 months internship period.

4. What did you enjoy the most?

The thing that I enjoyed the most is the pop quizzes that are conducted after the online
lecture session. These quizzes are good ways for me to constantly recall back the things that
sir had taught in the BBB. I felt sometimes it is quite nervous to complete the quizzes in
relatively short time but luckily the questions in quiz are the things that we had learnt in class
if you stay focus throughout the session.

Another thing that I enjoy the most in this course is the lab session. Even though we
are having online lab session for this semester, however it is undeniable that the consequence
model (PHAST) and risk assessment (SAFETI) have enhanced my understanding on how
engineers could prior evaluate the consequence or risk of certain process with the help of the
models. Unfortunately, the I only have one chance to accesses the software due to limitation
of school computer number so student have to take turn for every week. Despite this, I still
feel the lab session is quite interesting and allow me to familiar with the software.
5. What did you like the least?

The thing that I like the least throughout this course is the online test. For me, I hard
to concentrate in answering the test questions at home. And also, I feel like the question more
belong to open-ended one which means you cannot the answer from anywhere even though it
is online test. Therefore, I still prefer physical test no matter in term of the level of question
or time. Besides, another thing I found less effective is having online tutorial class. This is
because online tutorial class provide less interaction between the lecturer and the students.
Sometimes, it is hard to express the question that you concern about through online chat
board or voice chat. Comparing to physical tutorial session, online tutorial session restricting
the chance to discuss among the peers. This is the part that I like the least but so far it is not
big problem for me, because I can still replay back the video even though I don’t understand
the explanation from Dr Azizul at first.

6. What do you plan to do differently next time?

Throughout these 12 weeks online study, I have noticed some of my shortcomings

while attending the online class. For example, I feel tired and discouraging easily when the
session is more than 1 hour. Hence, it is quite hard for me to stay concentrated throughout the
class session, especially in Tuesday morning class. Sometimes, I might daydream and let me
lose track of the lecture. Based on these problems, I have summarized some that I could
implement next time to increase my learning efficiency. In order to improve my
concentration throughout the whole session, I think I can practice writing own notes while
listening the explanation to avoid myself being driven away by the sleepiness. I think that
creating own notes would be effective for me to stay concentrated throughout the session and
also a great initiative for me to recall what I have learnt in a day. Next, the thing that I would
practice in the future course is the habit of revision on the previous topics before the new
session started. I believe this is good habit for me to practice on because I always start to do
my revision 2 or 3 days before the exam. Therefore, I hardly understand the concept of each
chapter sometimes because I might get confused when study all chapters in few days.
