Lockheed F-80C Shooting Star

The F-80 Shooting Star was a remarkable milestone in military aviation. lt was the first operational
United States jet flghter, greatly outperforming the initial US design, the Bell P-59, which proved unsuitable
for deployment. Significantly, it successfully brought the United States Army Air Force into the "Jet Age" as
the world transitioned from WWll to the Cold War.
The Shooting Star prototype was created in the very brief period of 143 days beginning on 26 June,
1943 by Lockheed's Advanced Development Projects team - the Skunk Works; lead by the legendary Clar-
ence "Kelly" Johnson. The fighter first took to the air on 8 January 1944, and after further development was
put into production under the designation P-80A. Service experience required additional changes which finally
resulted in the deflnitive P-80C variant. When the United States Air Force became a separate branch of the
US armed forces in 1947, the pursuit aircraft were re-designated as flghters, and the P-80 became the F-80.
While the Shooting Star was conceived to be an air superiority fighter opposing Luftwaffe jets, in actu-
ality, it engaged in the world's first jet vs. jet aerial combat over Korea on 8 November, 1950, in which Lt. Rus-
sell Brown claimed destruction of a lr,1iG-15. Despite this early success, the straight-wing F-80 was no longer
suitable as a dog-fighter. anc the Shoctl^g Sta'-l: rate y iound its niche as a ground attack and interdiction
aircraft employed in the dangerous anc ungLano'3-s :;siness of delivering bombs and rockets to Commu-
nist targets. ln the end, F-80Cs flew over'0C.COC rr.ssions in Korea, more than any other aircraft type.
Beyond the F-80's direct contributions, its durac e a^c adaptable airframe served as the basis for the long
serving T-33 trainer and F-94 all-weather intercep:cr.
