Avionics Notes

This document discusses key aspects of avionics systems including their importance, challenges, areas, and safety issues. It notes that avionics provide greater situational awareness, safety, and reliability while enhancing flight control and communication. However, operating and determining when to use advanced avionics, and how the additional information affects pilot decision making present challenges. The document also outlines areas of avionics like communications and flight control systems. It discusses safety issues where pilots rely too heavily on automation and try to fix it rather than switching to manual control when needed. Finally, it describes the three axis control of autopilots.

IMPORTANCE OF AVIONICS

• Greater situational awareness

• Smaller crew
• Enhanced safety
• Engine control
• Reliable automated systems
• Enhanced communication
• On-board position determination/collision avoidance
• On-board flight path management
• On-board health monitoring
• Enhanced controllability and maneuverability

THREE CHALLENGES OF AVIONICS

1. How to operate advanced avionics systems. Acquire the “how-to” knowledge

needed to operate advanced avionics systems.

“Paano gamitin ng tama?? Ano ang function ano ang purpose”

2. Which advanced avionics systems to use and when. Learning to manage the
many information now available.

“Alin ang gagamitin at the right time?”

3. How advanced avionics systems affect the pilot. The additional information can
affect the decision making of the pilot.

“Paano maapektuhan ng maraming information ang decision making ng pilot

Areas of Avionics

• Communications
• Air Navigation
• Flight Control System ???
• Fuel Quantity Indication System (FQIS) ???
• Traffic Collision and Avoidance Systems ???

Safety Issues of Autopilot

• Affected pilots are reluctant to voluntarily reduce the extent of which they use
full automation capability to deal with any situation.

“Ayaw bawasan ang kanilang dependency sa automation sa kahit anong situation,

routine man o abnormal”

• If full automation is not available, or if no longer capable of delivering the a/c

control, tendency is to partially retain use of automation rather than wholly
manual a/c control.

“Given na sira ang automation, pinipilit ayusin ang automatic systems even if partial
control lang ang meron than using manual control muna habang hinahanap problem”

Three axis control of A/P

One axis – Controls ailerons AKA wing leveler systems

Twin axis – Controls ailerons & rudder
Three axis – Controls ailerons, elevators, and rudder
