Goldenstate College General Santos City Issue No. 01 Rev No. 00 Reference No. Lesson Plan Effectivity Date: June 15, 2020 Page No. 1 of 3

This lesson plan aims to teach students how to evaluate functions. It provides examples of evaluating different types of functions by substituting values for variables. Students are expected to evaluate functions by replacing variables with given values and computing the results. The lesson defines evaluating a function as replacing the variable with a value from the domain and calculating the output. Examples show evaluating basic functions, composite functions, and absolute value functions at different values. Students are given practice problems to evaluate functions at specific values as an assignment.

2. Analysis
Guide Questions:
 Who can give an idea what is Law of Substitution about?
 How to evaluate functions?

3. Abstraction

Definition: Evaluating function means replacing the variable in the function, in this
case x, with a value from the function’s domain and computing for the result. To denote
that we are evaluating f at a for some a in the domain of f, we write f(a).

Example 1. Evaluate the following functions at x = 1.5:

2 x +1
(h) g(h) = 2x + 1 (j) r(x) =
x−1
(i) q(h) = x 2−2 x+2 (k) F(x) = [x] + 1, where [x] is the greatest integer function.

Solution. Substituting 1.5 for x in the functions above, we have

(a) g(1.5) = 2(1.5) + 1 = 4

(b) q(1.5) = (1.5)² - 2(1.5) + 2 = 2.25 – 3 + 2 = 1.25
2 ( 1.5 ) +1 3+1
(c) r(x) = = =8
( 1.5 ) −1 0.5
(d) f(x) = {1.5} + 1 = 1+1 = 2

Example 2. Find (-4) and r(1) where g and r are as defined in the previous example.

Solution. This is not possible because -4 is not in the domain of g(x) and 1 is not in the
domain of r(x).

Example 3. Evaluate the following functions, where f and q are as defined in Example 1.

(a) f(3x – 1) (b) q (2x + 3)

Solution.
(b) q (2x + 3) = (2x + 3)² + 2(2x + 3) + 2
(a) f(3x – 1) = 2 ( 3x – 1) + 1
= (4x² + 12x + 9) – 4x -6 +2
=6x – 2 + 1
= 4x² + 8x + 5
= 6x - 1

4. Application
I. Evaluate the following functions at x = 3.
(a) f(x) = x – 3

(b) g(x) = x² - 3x + 5
3
(c) h(x) = √ x ³+ x+ 3

x ²+1
(d) p(x) =
x −4

(e) f(x) = |x−5| where |x−5| means the absolute value of x – 5.

IV. Assignment

1. Evaluate the following functions at x = - 4.

a. f(x) = x³ - 64

b. g(x) = |x ³−3 x ²+3 x−1|

c. r(x) = √ 5−x

x+ 3
d. q(x) =
