Degree Assignment 1
Degree Assignment 1
RATIONALE
This assignment has been designed to allow students to test and demonstrate their understanding
and ability to explain the usages of networking software, set up a simple virtual local area
network, and trace data packets sent. Upon completion of this coursework, students will be able
to:
Students are required to use CISCO packet tracer to create a virtual network which
consist of five departments in a college. They are Student Department, Finance Department,
Marketing Department, HR Department, and IT Department. Students need to assign IP address,
create virtual LAN, and set some security rules to permit or block certain access into specific
network or services. The detailed requirements are as the following:
a. Every department has its own server to be served as a DHCP, FTP, and HTTP server for
its own department.
b. Every department has its own printer and its own switch.
c. Every department has its own wireless access point for users to connect.
d. Every department has its own VLAN.
e. Student department DHCP service must be able to assign IP address for at least 20000
students through wireless service.
f. This college only have 3 routers, and 5 switches to use.
g. Router 1 is reserved for student department use, router 2 is reserved for IT department
use, and router 3 is reserved for the other three departments use.
h. VTP concept is applied in router 3 subnet where there must be a VTP server to manage
another two VTP client. Only one switch is allowed to connect to the router 3. Every
department in this router can add, or remove any devices easily through their own switch.
i. One of the router 2 ports is reserved for connecting to public internet (a
telecommunication company). This port ONLY can let public users to enter this college
network for viewing web sites purpose hosted in IT department server.
j. Students connecting to college network are ONLY allowed to open web sites from IT
department server and Student department server. Students are not allowed to enter any
other subnet belongs to the rest of the departments.
k. All users in this college are ONLY allowed to open web sites from public internet, except
IT department users are allowed to connect to public internet for all purposes.
l. HR, Finance, and Marketing departments can do file transfer, and open web applications
from IT department server.
m. IT department server can perform any service with port number > 15 to all servers in the
college.
TASKS
1. Solve the case study in the previous page using CISCO packet tracer.
2. Refer to marking scheme on the marks allocation for individual marks and group marks.
3. Create a table to show all network devices’ and end devices’ IP address, subnet mask,
default gateway.
4. Create a table to show the IP range (first usable IP address, last usable IP address,
network ID, and broadcast IP) used in every subnet.
5. Solve this task separately from the existing project in another CISCO file. If you are
given an IP address of 192.168.3.0/16 to be reserved for the local area network
connecting to Router0 through Switch1, how many bits (MOST MINIMUM) would you
borrow from host bits and assign equally to four different subnets in the same physical
LAN? How many users can be supported in each LAN? Justify your answer with all
detailed calculations and create a new CISCO packet tracer file for this specific LAN.
ii. Hardcopy
a. Assignment Submission Form
b. Report as described in TASKS
c. Turnitin Report
d. Marking scheme
