Duster Project

This document describes the design of a mechanical blackboard eraser. The eraser uses a continuous linkage mechanism unlike a pantograph, which uses a parallelogram linkage. The objectives of the eraser are to minimize the time spent erasing and simplify the process. It aims to vastly reduce the effort and repeated motions required to erase a blackboard. The eraser is designed to work faster than manual erasing and save time and energy in the classroom while reducing health risks. It uses a slider-crank linkage system and is intended to easily and efficiently clear a blackboard in a timely manner.

BLACKBOARD ERASER

The Blackboard Eraser is a device that uses mechanical linkage connected in a

series manner. They use the same principle of linkage as our earlier proposal the
pantograph but which was politely voted down by our teacher. What makes our
current device different from our former project other than its purpose is its linkage
manner. The linkage manner consisted in our blackboard eraser is continuous
without having to form like any shape but the pantograph on the other hand it is
connected in a parallelogram manner.
Objective

This mechanical instrument is designed for the purposes. It has two objectives; the
first is in relation to time while the other one is in relation to simplification. When
we analyze its first objective in relation to time its main purpose is to minimize the
time spent erasing the blackboard. This is a device meant to decrease the workload
necessary to erase a blackboard immensely. When we come to its second objective
it has to do with simplification of your work it achieves this by vastly reducing the
repetition of the stroke needed to clear a whole blackboard. What it is meant by
this is the device alleviates the users burden originated from the repeated tedious
motion caused by erasing the blackboard.
Our primary objective of our project was to design a mechanism that will erase a
board by the push of a button, which automatic, and manually by rotating the
crank. The design should also be able to perform this function faster than if it were
performed manually by a person. Overall the chief benefit of our device will be its
ability to save time and energy in the classroom; in addition to this it also
minimizes the risk on health.
To accomplish this task, our team went through many stages of brainstorming
plans. After various designs, we finally settled on what is essentially a slider-crank
linkage system. We chose this particular mechanism because we had studied it in
our Mechanical Engineering Design course earlier in the semester, and thus we
saw this as a good opportunity to apply what we had learned.
The prototype that we built of our design was scaled down for the purpose of this
project. The completed prototype is pictured in below figure. Due to various
constraints such as time, money and availability, we were unable to acquire some
of the components we originally choose and we were forced to work with what we
could find. Thus, we had to make amendments to our project in order to
accommodate these factors. Nevertheless, this did not hold us back and we were
ultimately able to make adequate adjustments to our project.
Methodology

It is a mechanical linkage connected in a manner based on a zigzag shape. Using

the same principle as a pantograph bars connected by pins, it can compress or
extend like an accordion having a characteristic of fold and stretch. This can be
found in extension arms for wall mounted mirrors, temporary fences, scissor lifts
and other scissor mechanisms such as the pantograph used in electric locomotives
and trams.
The material used for making the linkage mechanism for the blackboard eraser is
not hard to identify. Simple metal, wood and even plastic can be used to make the
duster. The component within the duster is the straight-line bars or arms and the
pins used to join them. In which all of them combined form a linkage mechanism.
Expected Outcome

The expected outcome is it will erase or clear the black board in a more easier and
time efficient manner without having to go through the process of continuously
using a small duster to erase a whole board. Just by using this simple instrument
we can achieve the desired cleanliness in no time.

Application Area

Its application is mostly around schools but anywhere with a blackboard can
benefit from this device. It doesn’t require a certain type of person to operate this
instrument, anyone can use this instrument from a student to a teacher. This
instrument is especially aims in making the job of the cleaning staff very easy. Not
only is it an instrument it is a great example for the topic on degree of freedom,
mechanical linkage and etc.…
Motivation

We got the motivation from the countless hardship teachers, student who are in
blackboard duty and the cleaning staff face plus the problems encountered by dusts
of chalks, which are the causes for eye, skin and lung diseases, has been our
inspiration to design on board duster furthermore it saves energy and time for the
user in this case as mentioned in the above paragraph teachers, students and
cleaning staff. Although there are many technologies which are intended to replace
blackboards, our design has been found to more economical so the best way to
tackle this problem is to assemble a slider-crank mechanism in to the black board,
and we made one for prototype.

Budget

Since one of our main objective is to construct and assemble the pantograph with
minimum spending putting into account students can be able to purchase and build
this uncomplicated plain device.
After asking around and much consideration we have come up with the budget
