MODULE 1.

INTRODUCTION TO BIOCHEMISTRY

INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE: The study of biochemistry shows how organic compounds
present in living organisms interact to maintain and perpetuate life. In this brief introduction,
we will describe the milestones in the history of biochemistry, the different branches of the
field, the attributes of living organisms, and the various elements that comprise living
organisms.

Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, the student shall be able to:
1 Describe the chemical structure that make up the components of living matter

2 Describe the interactions of these components that give rise to the organized
supramolecular structures, cells and multicellular tissues
3 Explain how living organisms extract energy from the surroundings to perpetuate life

4 Explain how chemical reactions are regulated inside living cells

5 Explain how organisms store and transmit genetic information to grow and to
reproduce accurately
6 Apply key concepts in biochemistry to explain its practical applications in the field of
nutrition, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and allied fields
7 Demonstrate good leadership, critical and creative thinking skills and ability to
communicate scientific information clearly and concisely imbued with Augustinian
charism.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Describe the important milestones in the history of biochemistry

2. Identify the different branches of biochemistry
3. Enumerate the properties of a living organism
4. Identify the trace and bulk elements essential to humans and other living organisms

What is Biochemistry? Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of living organisms. It
involves the study of the chemical processes occurring within living systems:

• the structure, function and interactions of various biomolecules inside cells

 the control of information flow through biochemical signaling, and
• the flow of chemical energy through metabolism.
Biochemistry deals with the structures, functions and interactions of
biomolecules, which provide the structure of cells and perform many of the functions
associated with life. It has three branches, namely, structural ande functional biochemistry,
informational biochemistry, and bioenergetics.
In this module, we will also discuss how biochemistry came to be what it is today from
ancient times, to the time Neuberg coined the term Biochemistry for the chemistry of life at the
start of the nineteenth century, all through the 20th century of modern Biochemistry. We will
also define the attributes or distinguishing features of living organisms that define what life is.
The biochemicals of life consist of water, organic compounds which comprise the
biomolecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and vitamins, as well as the
macro- and micro-minerals of biological importance. The important characteristics of carbon
atoms that make up organic compounds are discussed and students will become familiar with
the various functional groups present in biomolecules. By the end of this course, students will
have the knowledge on the foundations of medicinal chemistry and pharmacology that are
needed in their various fields of study.

ACTIVITY:

ACTIVITY 1: LEARNING ORGANIC FUNCTIONAL GROUPS

1. Draw the structures of the organic functional groups.

2. Identify the hybridization of the orbitals of carbon used in the bonding whether sp 3,
sp2, or sp orbitals.

3. Identify the organic functional groups present in biochemicals of medical importance.
