Beam Verification using IIW Block
OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Beam Verification Overview
u This procedure is designed for verifying the beam angle, beam exit point, and
beam wedge delay manually using an IIW block.
u This is useful for troubleshooting beam quality, problems with the calculated
wedge delay, time of flight and angle error, or when the calibration wizard is not
returning desired results.
u Use of common calibration blocks like the IIW are the fastest and most reliable
method of troubleshooting…..just like conventional UT.
u For any A-scan or focal law, basic beam parameters are measured and verified
against the software so you can be sure that the focal law calculator has returned
the beam you programmed.
2
OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Beam Exit Point Verification
u Trouble shooting a suspect focal law starts with verification of the beam exit point.
u Does the beam exit the wedge where the software predicted?
u Select the focal law on the A-scan view and peak the signal using the green
envelop. (Use envelope function key or select at Display>Overlay>A-scan>Envelope
u From the peaked position make a non permanent mark on the wedge where it lines
up with the exit reference on the IIW. (Red arrow left)

OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Beam Exit Point cont.
u Physically measure the distance from the face of the wedge to the exit point. For
the 55 degree focal law below pictured below the measurement on the IIW block
matches closely the value in UT>Beam>Index Offset.
u The measured beam exit should be within a fraction of a mm from the calculated
beam exit in the software or it is an indication of a problem and requires
troubleshooting.
u Mark the beam wedge exit point with a non permanent marker or tape. This position
is needed to measure the real beam angle.

OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Beam Exit Point cont.
u It is important to note that just because the same elements are used for
all focal laws in the sector scan, it does not mean that they will have the
same exit point.
u For this reason it is necessary to dynamically move the probe on the IIW
block slightly to peak each relevant signal.
u For a .6mm pitch probe, the delta between the exit point of the 45 and 70
degree focal laws is about 5mm.
u For a 1mm pitch probe the delta between the exit points for the same
sector scan is about 10mm depending on the wedge and aperture.
u This is visible by zooming the S-scan view near at the probe to
component interface near 0mm on the UT axis.
5
OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Beam Angle Verification
u From the measured position of the beam exit point that was marked on the wedge,
peak the signal by moving the probe and ensure that the angle is that same as
indicated in the software.
u If the angle is significantly off it is an indication of an error
u Minor angle error due to material velocity differences is normal. For most
probe\wedge combinations less than ½ degree angle error tolerance can be
expected for shear wave wedges in the range of 40-70 degrees depending on the
probe element pitch and aperture.

OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Wedge Delay Overview
u The IIW block is a preferred calibration block for time of flight and wedge delay
verification.
u Position the probe so that both the 50mm and 100mm radius reflectors are peaked
as pictured below.
u Whether verifying the calculator results or modifying the existing wedge delay
values, the 50mm and 100mm radius reflectors of the IIW will provide a very
accurate reading or calibration.

OmniScan MX2 Training – MX2 Wedge Delay Wizard Review
u The MX2 wedge delay calibration wizard is designed to make a minor
tweak to the beam delay to ensure that zero on the A-scan = the wedge
exit point and that depth and sound path readings are accurate.
u It will not correct the refracted beam angle, will not fix an incorrect wedge
incident angle, and will not fix a velocity error from the wedge or
component material. Any of those problems can only be fixed by
recalculating the focal laws.
u The MX2 wedge delay wizard will fix the beam delay to account for a
wedge element height that is worn or other than what was entered into the
calculator (MX2 wizard).
u Using the MX2 wedge delay wizard to fix parameters other than element
height is a common mistake that will not improve results.

OmniScan MX2 Training – MX2 Wedge Delay Wizard Review
u Wedge delay is normally completed using the 50mm or 100mm radius of the IIW
and stepping through the MX2 calibration wizard as pictured below.
u If a problem that cannot be explained that is preventing completion of the wizard
or the wizard is not returning expected results……….Go back to UT basics on
one A-scan.
u Troubleshoot the individual beam for exit point, angle, and wedge delay using the
IIW exactly like conventional UT.
9
OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Wedge Delay Verification Procedure
u Program or recall a 45-70 degree S-scan.
u After completion of the wedge delay wizard, upon recalling a saved Ops setup file,
or to verify the calculated beam delay using the IIW block, configure the MX2 as
follows:
– >Display>Selection>UT Mode>Sound Path
– >Display>Selection>Layout>A-S-[C] >Show [C-scan]>On
– >Display>Selection>DataSource>Normal
– >UT Settings>General>Start>20mm, >Range>85mm (For 45 degree focal law)
– >Gate\Alarm>GateA>Start>90mm, >Width 20mm, Threshold>10%
– >Gate\Alarm>GateB>Start>40mm, >Width 20mm, Threshold>10%
– >Measurement>Reading>Reading3>SB, Reading4>SA
– >Display>Overlay>A-scan>Envelope>On
– >Scan>Inspection>Scan>Time
u The exercise can also be completed using
the data file that accompanies this
presentation loaded on OmniPC.

OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Wedge Delay Verification Procedure
u Open data file “WedgeDelayVerifyIIW.Opd” using OmniPC to reproduce the same
measurements and results from the example in the next series of slides.
11
OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Wedge Delay Verification Procedure cont.
u Position the probe away far
enough away from the IIW radius
Probe movement
where no signal is in either gate A
or gate B. (C-scan empty)
u Select the start inspection button
on the MX2. The C-scan will clear
and start scrolling.
u Slowly move the probe forward
until all focal laws have passed
through the gates over the 50mm
and 100mm radius and select
pause.
u When using gate peak mode,
adjust gain so no focal law is over
100% amplitude.
u Repeat the process until a good
scan is achieved for all focal laws.

18
OmniScan MX2 Training – IIW Radius calibration vs SDH?
u What is the advantage of calibrating time of flight and wedge delay on a radius
instead of a side drilled hole?
u When using a side drilled hold for a true depth wedge delay calibration, any angle
error is inserted into the equation reducing accuracy.
u The sound path radius is not dependent on any trigonometry and will return the
best results.
