Similes: Swim Like A Fish Because Fish Swims Well

Similes are used to compare two things using "like" or "as". There are two common patterns for similes - using "like" followed by a verb and noun, or using "as" followed by an adjective, "as", and a noun. Examples are given such as "she swims like a fish" or "he is as tall as a giant". While variations can be used, established similes like "as strong as an ox" or "as fierce as a lion" are preferred.

SIMILES

Similes are a way to compare two

things using ‘like’ or ‘as’. For
example, if I want to say that
somebody swims well, I could say they
swim like a fish because fish swims well.
There are two basic patterns that you
can use.

Pattern 1:
like verb + like + noun

She swims like a fish.

He looks like an ogre.
She plays like a pro.
He walks like a duck.
She acts like a fool.

Pattern 2:
as as + adjective + as + noun

He is as tall as a giant.
He is as fast as a rocket.
He is as graceful as a swan.
She is as sneaky as a fox.
He is as quiet as a mouse.

NOTES:
As strong as a wrestler. (χ) As fierce as a tiger. (χ)
As strong as an ox. (√) As fierce as a lion. (√)
Although it is true that a wrestler is strong and tigers are fierce,
similes are originally set and should be followed.
