Rational Numbers
Introductory Message
For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 7 Alternative Delivery Mode Module on Rational

Numbers!

The hand is one of the most symbolized parts of the human body. It is often used
to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module is designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

What I Need to Know This will give you an idea of the skills or
competencies you are expected to learn in
the module.

What I Know This part includes an activity that aims to

check what you already know about the
lesson to take. If you get all the answers
correct (100%), you may decide to skip this
module.

sentence/paragraph to be filled in to process
what you learned from the lesson.

What I Can Do This section provides an activity which will

help you transfer your new knowledge or skill
into real life situations or concerns.

Assessment This is a task which aims to evaluate your

level of mastery in achieving the learning
competency.

Additional Activities In this portion, another activity will be given to

you to enrich your knowledge or skill of the
lesson learned. This also tends retention of
learned concepts.

Answer Key This contains answers to all activities in the

module.

At the end of this module you will also find:

References This is a list of all sources used in developing

this module.

The following are some reminders in using this module:

1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not

What I Need to Know

This module is designed and written to help you understand the

lessons in your own. This is prepared in simple approach to help you learn in
school or at home. The goal of this module is to help you understand more
the concepts of rational numbers.

This module is divided into two lessons:

Lesson 1 – Introduction to Rational Numbers

Lesson 2 – Rational Numbers on a Number Line

After going through this module, you will be able to express rational
numbers from fraction form to decimal form and vice versa ( M7NS Ie- 1 ).
Specifically, you are expected to:

1. define rational numbers;

2. express rational numbers from fraction form to decimal form and vice
versa; and
3. arrange rational numbers on a number line.

In going through this module, you need to have patience to understand

well what you have read. Answer all the exercises to the best of your ability.

Lesson Introduction to Rational Numbers
1

Rational is derived from the word "ratio" which means quotient. Rational
numbers can simply be written as a result of dividing two integers.

What’s In

In the previous lesson you have learned the different operations on

integers. Before we continue with this new module, answer the given activity
first.

Activity 1: Let’s Recall

Let’s Find Out: Sum of integers
Let’s Use These Materials: Mathematics notebook and ballpen
Let’s Do It This Way:
1. To answer the riddle, compute the sum of the given integers.
2. Write the letter of the problem above its corresponding answer found
in the box.
3. Write the answer in your Mathematics notebook. The first letter is
done for you.

Who was the English mathematician who first used

the modern symbol of equality in 1557?

R (-65) + (-20) C 30 + ( -20

B 38 + (-15) D (110) + (-75)
O 45 + (-20) T (16) + (-38)
E (78) + (-15) E (-75) + (20)

What is It

Look at the following numbers below. These numbers can be classified

into rational or not. Can you classify them?

Quotient is an integer Quotient is a fraction

The quotient of two integers is not always an integer as shown
above.

The set of integers is closed under addition, subtraction, and

multiplication but not in division. So, you need to consider the set of
Rational Numbers.

6
Think of This! Representation Examples
Rational Number is any { }
number that can be
written in the form , , ,0.5 ,
Let a,b be an integer, then a
where a and b are
rational number is defined as
integers, and b is not
equal to 0. , where b is not equal to 0.

Let us classify each given number whether it is a rational or not.

A. is a rational number because it is a quotient of two integers and the

denominator is not 0. (a = 3 and b = 2)
B. 1.73205… is an irrational number because it cannot be written in the
form
C. is a rational number since it can be written as , , , etc.
D. is a rational number since it can be written as or .
E. 0.̅ is rational number and it can be written as .

Note: Any rational number can be expressed from fractional form to decimal
form and vice versa.

Converting Fractions to Decimals (with Terminating Decimals)
Remember: We can convert fraction to decimal by simply dividing the
numerator by the denominator.
