‘Shower Turn On Run
Turn Off Drain Water’ Outro of the podcast
(00:06-0:10) My: Hi, welcome to today’s special episode of Shower Thoughts! I’m My...
(00:10-00:24) Phuong: And I’m Phuong, we are your hosts! As always our show is open to calls at any
time! Dial 1900 2002 to be featured in our podcast! Also, since we are live today, listeners can send in
comments or questions during our show!
(00:24-00:33) My: Our theme for this month’s podcast is Body Image and Beauty Standards. Our focus
today will be on how to overcome our negative perception of ourselves.
(00:33-00:43) Phuong: Yup, and just for today we have specially invited a guest speaker from HDDI
University, Dr Hannah Tan! Hi Hannah, please introduce yourself to our audience.
(00:56-01:00) My: So would it be okay for you to share stories you have heard from your clients?
(01:00-01:28) Hannah: As a psychologist, we need to keep whatever our clients say private and
confidential. But most of them share about times when they look into the mirror and feel that a particular
part of their body, for example their stomach, arms, legs or face, looks too fat or flabby. Or that there are
times when they avoid wearing certain types of clothes because they are afraid of people judging them for
their choice of clothes or their body does not fit the clothes they wear.
(01:28-01:32) Phuong and My: yea we both have felt that way before.
(01:32-01:48) Hannah: For some, it might just be an occasional feeling of insecurity, but for others it can
be quite serious because continuous criticism of our body can lead to the development of bulimia,
anorexia or even body dysmorphic disorder.
(01:48-01:59) My: We have a comment from @iamawall, the user asks are there any ways to see past our
flaws? She says that she doesn’t want to look into the mirror anymore.
(01:59-02:23) Hannah: Well, I wouldn’t recommend not looking at the mirror at all because that would
just seem like you are avoiding your insecurities. Instead of focusing on just the negative aspects of your
body, try to repeatedly convince yourself that your body is special the way it is. But don’t go too far with
the compliments because it can also lead to you having toxic positivity, which may mean that you’re
deluding yourself.
(02:23-02:33) Phuong: @letmepass has commented you don't have to be a supermodel, because
everyone is shaped differently and your flaws are your signature actually.
(02:33-02:46) My: Exactly! And these are facts that everyone needs to know! And I suppose that as long
as you are healthy and satisfied with the way you look, then there is no need to conform to unrealistic
societal standards.
(02:46-02:49) Hannah: Mhm that is right! I am glad that you said that My!
(02:49-02:52) My: thank you Doctor! Well, we are going to take an ad break now!
