Hades was the Greek god of the underworld and the eldest son of Cronus and Rhea. Along with his brothers Zeus and Poseidon, Hades defeated their father Cronus and the Titans, claiming rule over the cosmos. The three brothers divided rule between them, with Zeus taking the sky, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the underworld. Hades married Persephone, though he tricked her into eating pomegranate seeds so she would be forced to return to the underworld for part of each year.
