UNPACKING AND INSPECTING
This equipment was factory tested, inspected, packed, and delivered to the carrier
with utmost care. Do not accept shipment from carrier which shows damage or
shortage until the carrier's agent endorses a statement of the irregularity on the face
of the carrier's receipt. Without documentary evidence, a claim cannot be filed.

Unpack equipment immediately upon receipt and thoroughly inspect for concealed
damage. If damage is discovered, cease further unpacking and request immediate
inspection by local agent of carrier. A written report of the agent's findings, with
his signature is necessary to support claim. Check your shipment against the
shipping papers for possible shortage. Do not discard any packing material until all
items are accounted for. Small items are often thrown away with packing material.

Packing material should be retained until equipment testing is completed. Any

equipment returned to the factory should be packed in original cartons, insured and
pre-paid.

INSTALLATION
Install rack-mounted equipment in a well-ventilated, well-grounded, and shielded
rack cabinet. Do not locate solid-state equipment in a rack above tube-type
equipment which produces high temperatures. Problems can also be avoided by
locating this unit away from other equipment which has transformers that produce
strong magnetic fields. These fields can induce hum and noise into the Marti
equipment thus reducing performance. Strong radio-frequency <RF>fields should be
avoided where possible. Extensive shielding and filtering have been incorporated
into this equipment to permit operation in moderate RF environments. All
equipment racks, cabinets, etc., should be bonded together by wide copper
grounding strap to ensure that all system elements are at the same RF ground
potential.

S7Z-:J{}7R4NSMITIEl? INSTALlA TION

1. Program audio output is connected to balanced audio input screw terminals. Use
shielded wire! Program audio level required is +8 dBm, 600 ohms balanced and
isolated from ground. For dual channel stereo repeat instructions at second
transmitter. Audio processing requirements of the SlL-30 will be discussed in the
section titled OPERAnON.
2.. Connect a Remote Control or Subcarrier Generator <modulator) to the jack
marked Sub IN. The subcarrier source may be 50 to 600 ohms impedance, and the
input level required is approximately one (D volt RMS. Subcarrier frequencies may
be between 39 KHz and 67 KHz. Systems factory supplied with 2.00 KHz IF
bandwidth will carry subcarriers up to 67 KHz. For other subcarrier frequencies or
narrow IF bandwidth systems contact the factory.

S7Z AN7EJ\WA INSTALLATION CHECKlIST

The followng suggestions are offered to help those responsible for antenna
installations avoid costly errors in assembly and adjustment. Marti Electronics Inc.
assumes no responsibility for the installation and performance of antenna systems
associated with its equipment. The following suggestions are not intended to be a
complete step-by-step procedure, simply a listing of some of the most frequently
associated with its equipment. The following sugge

Antenna Assembly
Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. If no instructions were included
with the antenna, call or write the antenna manufacturer for
instructions. Transmission Une Connector AssemblyDo not use RG-58 U or RG-8 U
cable for SI1. station antennas! They have too much loss at VHF and UHF
frequencies. Follow the instructions furnished by the manufacturer when cutting
coaxial cable. Inspect the cable ends for small metal fragments which can short-
circuit the line inside the connector assembly. Check the line for a short-circuit
condition after each connector is installed by using an ohmmeter. Pressurized line
should be checked for several days under pressure before installation on a tower to
ensure that there are no leaks in the line or fittings.

Moisture Proofing CorlKConnector.s and Fittings

Extreme care must be exercised with coaxial cable before and after connectors have
been installed to ensure that moisture does not enter the line. Foam dielectric line
can take on moisture absorption which is difficult to detect and remedy. Therefore,
keep the line dry while in storage with ends tightly capped. Coaxial splices,
connectors, and fittings, to be located outside should be made mechanically tight,
then coated with a weather-proofing material such as SCOTCHKOTE over at least
two layers of SCOTCH 88 vinyl plastic electrical tape. Moisture problems in antenna
systems are usually traced back to connectors which have NOT been properly taped.
The Marti K-] Grounding and Weatherproofing Kit is recommended for use in each
new antenna installation.

location and Grounding of Coaxial Cable

Keep the SI1. receiver coaxial cable as far from the broadcast transmitter and its
coaxial cable as possible. DO NOT S1RAP RECEIVER CABLE TO THE MAIN
ANTENNA CABLE AT ANY POINT. PLACE THE RECEIVER ANTENNA COAXIAL
CABLE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE TOWER FROM THE MAIN ANTENNA
CABLE. Maintain maximum separation between these cables at all points,
including the distance from tower base to transmitter building as well as inside the
building.

Page 4
. - . . -- - - - - - - - - - - ---

System Grounding
It essential tha the S11. antenna system be properly grounded for safety and proper
operation.

Antenna Installation and Adjustment

The polarization of the transmit and receive antennas of the S11. system must be the
same! This means that if the transmitting antenna is horizontal, the receiving
antenna must also be horizontal. Each antenna should be attached to the tower to
allow for final adjustment in azimuth heading. After visual adjustment of the
antennas, the transmitter and receiver can be used to make the final adjustments of
the antennas. With the transmitter driving one antenna, the receiving antenna is
adjusted for maximum signal <indicated on the receiver} in both horizontal and
vertical directivity. CAlITION: Antennas have a 'major' and several 'minor' lobes in
their directivity patterns. A common error is to peak the antenna on a minor lobe,
resulting in a signal level of only a fraction of the major lobe signal. This error can
be avoided only by swinging the antenna through a large angle so that all lobes are
evaluated and the major lobe clearly determined. After one antenna is adjusted,
the transmitter and receiver locations are reversed, to allow adjustment of the other
antenna. If an RF watt meter is available, each antenna and transmission line can be
checked for VSWR when the transmitter is supplying power to it. The VSWR
should be less than 1. 5 to 1 (1. 5:1). IF THE ANTENNA SYSTEM FAILS TO GIVE
THE PREDICTED SIGNAL STRENGTH LEVEL, THE FOU.OWING ITEMS SHOULD
BE CHECKED:

1. Check for correct assembly of antenna.

2. Check that antennas have same polarity.
3. Check orientation of antennas in both horizontal and vertical directions.
4. Check VSWR of both transmit and receive antennas. VSWR should be less
than 1. 5: 1.
5. Check for required Fresnel zone path clearance at all points along radio
path.
6. Check for obstructions in the path such as trees and man-made structures.
Do not depend on maps or aerial photographs.

Page 5
OPERATION

COJ\.7IDl ANf) CO~TON FUNCTIONS

CONfROL Switch
When the transmitter is not in use the CONfROL switch should be in the "OFF'
position. The switch should be placed in "Sf ANDBY" position at least 2 minutes
before transmission is anticipated. Current drain is minimal in "Sf ANDBY"position.
The CONfROL switch is placed in "TRANSMIT' position when transmission is
desired.

METER Switch
The VU MEIER serves the function of indicating the relative power supply voltage,
relative RF power output, and the amount of modulation. With the METER
SWITCH in the "POWER SUPPLY" position, +1 VU indicates a power supply voltage
of approximately 13.5 v OC. "MODULATION" reads peak: modulation of the
transmitter. Zero (0) VU is 100% modulation. With a subcarrier, set modulation at
-2 VU peak:. An FM compressor-limiter will help control modulation peab and
increase average modulation. The METER indicates RF output only when the
CONfROL Switch is in the "lRANSMIT' position.

ANTENNAConnector
Connection of various antenna systems is covered under INSf All.A TION and
ANTENNAS.

RECVR Connector
The RECVR Connector is not used in the SIL-30 Transmitter.

ANTENNA<WARNINGLIGHD
The red LED light marked "ANTENNA"which is to the right of the METER on the
SIL-30 front panel, flashes to indicate a problem with the antenna when
transmitting. The ANTENNA <WARNINGLIGIID flashes if the CONfROL switch is
switched to "TRANSMIT' without an antenna connected. It can also indicate a
defective antenna, coaxial cable, or connector. Prolonged operation under these
conditions can damage the transmitter.

TEMP <WARNINGLIGHD
Flashing of the TEMP <WARNINGLIGHD indicates excessive operating temperature
within the transmitter. This can be caused by obstructed vent holes in the top or
rear of the unit, inoperative cooling fan, or antenna problems. Do not operate SIL-
30 until the cause of overheating is corrected!

Page 6

PRE-EMPHASISSWITCHES
Two progr~mmable switches SI and 52 on AUDIO BOARD, 800-194, enable the user
to select flat, 25, 50, or 75 micro-second pre-emphasis characteristics. The
selection of one of these options in the transmitter requires a corresponding selection
of SI and 52 on the receiver AUDIO BOARD, 800-205. Refer to STI.-30 Drawing
702-{)76A and R-I0 Drawing 702-{)57 for the location of these switches. The
switches, as shown in the diagrams, are positioned for 75 micro-seconds at the
factory. 75 micro-second pre-emphasis and de-emphasis produces the best threshold
noise performance in an FM system. It does, however. present problems in
modulation control. Some users therefore may wish to use 50, 25, or flat
processing. AM stations will find flat processing desirable since the STI. can be
treated as a pair of wires in proof of performance tests without possible
overmodulation of the link at high audio frequencies. With 75 micro-second pre-
emphasis, audio input levels to the transmitter should be reduced 20 dB below 100%
modulation when running frequency response tests to prevent overmodulation at the
higher audio frequencies. With a full quieting RF signal into the receiver, flat pre-
emphasis will produce a system signal to noise ratio approximately 6 dB less than 75
micro-second pre-emphasis. Received signal levels less than full quieting may
produce a difference of as much as 13 dB between flat and 75 micro-second pre-
emphasis.

FREQUENCY MEASUREMENT
The RF output frequency of this transmitter should be measured and adjusted as
often as necessary to insure on-frequency operation and to comply with regulations.
This procedure is covered in the section: TUNEUP PROCEDURE.

S7FP BYS7FP Sll-.J() OPERATING PNOCEDURE

1. Position CONTROL switch to "OFF', then plug STI.-30 into a 115 volt, AC,

5. If the ANfENNA CWARNINGLIGHD flashes in ''TRANSMIT' operation, switch

transmitter "OFF' immediately and check: antenna, connectors, and coaxial cable.

6. Flashing of the TEMP CWARNINGLIGHD indicates:

A. Obstructed vent holes in top or rear of unit.
B. Fan not operating.
C. Improper tuning, antenna load, or other problems causing excessive
heating.

STL-30 THEORY OF OPERATION

Refer to Block Diagram Drawing No. 702-078 and Schematic Diagrams.

POWEl? SlIPPL Y; 800-E49

Board 800-249 contains filter capacitors Cl and C2, voltage adjust pot Rl, and
reverse polarity protection diodes Dl, D2, and 00. The unregulated output
voltage of this supply is 17-20 volts, and is supplied from bridge rectifier Dl. Series
regulator IC-l is located on the large heat sink at the rear of the transmitter, and
supplies 13.5 volts DC at 5 amps.

AIE7Eli'BOARD, IJ(}(}-25E
The MEfER, meter illumination lamp, ANfENNA <WARNING LIGIIT> and TEMP
<WARNINGLIGIIT> LEOs, with their comparator drivers, IC-IA, IC-IB, are located
on the MEfER BOARD.

INPllT/OU7PUT FIL7E7?S, 8tJth8S.J

All input/output circuits connected to ACCESSORY connector, as well as the AC
line input, have radio-frequency filters. In addition to the L and C filter
components, a reverse polarity protector diode D2 is located on the 800-253 board.

AUDIO BOARD, 800-/94

The 600 ohm balanced audio input to the transmitter is connected to the inputs of a
unity gain differential amplifier IC-IA. A potentiometer, R9, is provided for
adjusting the amplifier to produce the maximum common mode rejection (CMR>.
The output of the differential amplifier is direct coupled to the pre-emphasis
amplifier. The negative feedback circuit of this amplifier has two capacitors
selected by switches 51 and 52 which provides options of 0, 25, 50, or 75
microseconds pre-emphasis. Following the pre-emphasis circuit are two stages of
active Butterworth low-pass filtering. The signal then is fed to the MODULATOR
audio input and to metering amplifiers IC-3A and IC-3B. The subcarrier input is
routed to the MODULATORsubcarrier input.

MODlJIATOB, 800-/95
The MODULATOR consists of a voltage controlled crystal oscillator Q2, buffer
amplifier Q3, subcarrier modulator D2, precision voltage regulator IC-l and oven
heater control Ql. Precise frequency control is obtained by thermally coupling
components Y-l, Ql, Q2, and IC-l to the temperature regulated Frequency
Control Module, 800-160-1. Coarse and fine frequency adjustment is provided by
L1 and 1.2 while main channel modulation is provided by a voltage variable
capacitance diode in the Frequency Control Module. Bias for this diode is obtained
through voltage divider resistors R4, RS, and ru. Diode Dl temperature
compensates the bias supply. Components L3, C13, and D2 permit phase
modulation of the subcarrier information upon the RF output of transistor Q3.

Page 9
MlILTIPIIEI? BOARD, 800-/6.J
The modulator RF output is frequency-multiplied in the multiplier board to obtain
the various operating frequencies listed on the STI.-30 specification sheet. The
multiplication factor for various frequency bands is as follows:
140-180MHz 12X
200 - 2fIJ MHz 16 X
280 - 340 MHz 24 X
400 - 480 MHz 24 X
The power level at the input to the multiplier is approximately 5 mw. and the
output level is O.9 to 1.5 watts.

BF POWEl? AMPLIFIER, 800-/7o-.JO

RF output of the MULTIPLIER BOARD is connected to the input of the power
amplifier board at a 50 ohm impedance. Transformation of the 50 ohm input to the
base impedance of Ql is accomplished by Cl, C2, and L1, L2, and L3. L4 and L5
provide a path for Q1 base current and the L5-Rl parallel circuit reduces low
frequency gain and instability. The RF output power of Ql is approximately 10
watts and is fed to the base of Q2 by the L-C impedance matching network shown on
the schematic. L13 and R2 reduce low frequency gain and instability. RF power at
the collector of Q2 is matched to 50 ohm by the L-C network shown. The collector
supply to Ql and Q2 is de-coupled by L8 and C5-10.

OU7PUT lOW-PASS FIllEl?, DIRECTIONAl COl/PlEI? 800-1!50

RF output from the RF POWER AMPLIFIER passes through a four-section low-pass
filter and directional-coupler before reaching the output connector. The
directional-coupler is of microstrip construction. The forward power sample of this
coupler is supplied to the "RF OUfPUT' METER, and the reflected power sample is
fed to comparator IC-IA on the METER board and flashes the ANfENNA <WARNING
LIGHD LED to indicate high VSWR. R5 and R6 calibrate the forward and reflected
power samples.

input barrier strip , (the 600 ohm balanced input). Connect an audio signal
generator between chassis and either Terminal 1 or 3. Set generator to 100Hz at 1
volt output. Increase sensitivity of audio voltmeter until the 100Hz output
component is indicated. Adjust R9 (CMR, Common Mode Rejection> for minimum
common mode output.
2. Set 51 and 52 on AUDIO BOARD, 800-194 for 75 micro-second pre-
emphasis with 51 and 52 positioned toward R15. Remove jumper and feed audio
signal generator into Terminals 1 and 3 of three-screw audio input barrier strip. Set
generator to 15 KHz and adjust level for O.78 volts <0 dBID>. on the audio voltmeter
connected as in (1,) above. Set generator to 400 Hz and observe audio voltmeter.
Level at 400 Hz should be exactly 17 dB below the level at 15 KHz. If not, return
to 15 KHz and adjust R15 by the amount in error at 400 Hz. Repeat process until
exact pre-emphasis is obtained.
3. Modulation meter calibration is covered in MODULATOR BOARD, 800-
195, Adjustments.

MODl/lA TOR BOARD. 800-195, ADJUS7ME7V7S

Connect dummy load with sampling attenuator to ANTENNA connector of

transmitter. Connect an accurate standard FM deviation meter and frequency
counter to sampling attenuator or FREQUENCY TEST JACK. Place CONTROL
switch in 'TRANSMIT' position.
1. Measure bias voltage at TP (test point) of MODULATORBOARD, 800-195
using digital DC voltmeter. This voltage should be that recorded on STL-JO
TRANSMITTER TEST REPORT. To ensure low distortion modulation, DO NOT
CHANGE TIllS VOLTAGE SETTING.
2. Set transmitter on frequency by adjusting L2 <fine) coil slug using correct
insulated tool. If nesessary, L1 <Coarseadjustment) can be made using the insulated
tool specified.

Page 13
3. Place TE5f MEIER in "MODULATION"position and feed a 400 Hz, +8
dBm signal from an audio signal generator into audio input terminals. The TE5f
METER should read "0 VU". If not adjust R24 <modulation meter calibrate> on
AUDIO BOARD, 800-194 for "0 VU". The FM deviation meter should read the
deviation specified under "100 % Modulation" on STI.-30 lRANSMITIER TE5f
REPORT. If not, adjust R6 on MODULATORBOARD, 800-195.
4. Remove 400 HZ tone. Feed audio signal generator set for 67 KHz at one
(1) volt into Jl Sub In. Set TE5f METER switch to "Sub Level" and adjust audio
signal generator level for a meter reading of "0 VU" . Adjust Rll for 20 %sub-carrier
injection as indicated on the linear vertical display on a spectrum analyzer.

MULTIPlIEli' BOAND, 8«)-/63, ADJUS7ME!V1S

Remove top cover of unit. Remove coaxial cable plug at RF Output jacl:: J2 of
Multiplier Board 800-163. Refer to Layout Drawing 702<)76A for location of
connectors, test points and adjustments.
1. Connect Bird, Model #43 Wattmeter with 5-watt element and 50 ohm
load to J2 of Multiplier Board 800-163. Connect sensitive multimeter (0-3 volt DC
range> negative probe to TP-l of Multiplier Board, and the positive probe to chassis
ground. Place CONTROL switch in "lRANSMIT" position. A minimum of 0.25 volts
should be indicated; if not, see MODULATORADJUSTMENTS.
2. Move negative probe of meter to TP-2, adjust L1 and 12 for maximum
indication.
3. Move negative probe of meter to TP-3, adjust L3 and L4 for maximum
indication.
4. Move negative probe of meter to TP-4, adjust 1..5and L6 for maximum
indication. N01E: Omit this step on the 140-180 MHz units.
5. Move negative probe of meter to TP-5, adjust C27 and C28 for maximum
indication.
6. Adjust C36 and C37 for maximum indication on the wattmeter connected
to J2 with R 14 power pot set for maximum. Adjust power level to approximately
1. 2 watts.
7. Place CONTROL switch in "OFF" position. Remove wattmeter from J2
and re-install coaxial cable plug at J2.

POWEli' AMPlIFIEll 8«)-/7~.JO. ADJUS7ME!V1S

Connect Bird wattmeter with 50 ohm load and a 50 watt element (for the correct
frequency range> to STI.-30 ANlENNA connector. Connect a 13.5 v. DC regulated
bench power supply with an accurate 0-6 Amp. meter to transmitter using POWER
CABlE 586-074.
