Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder
Plato‘s famous words ‘Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder’ appear to be a fact
and universal truth.
In a world with so much freedom the definition of what is considered beautiful is
variable. However, each individual finds beauty only in that thing that he is
obsessed about. For example a child finds beauty in toys and chocolates; parents
find beauty in their children; poet finds beauty in poetry; scientists in science, and
so on.
As William Shakespeare said “Beauty is bought by judgement of the eye.”
For each person the meaning of beauty varies.
There is an old saying: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” It’s about
individuals who find the person, object, painting, color and etc. pleasing to
themselves.
So,Beauty means different things to different people .
For example, if one looks at a painting and says “I like the colors and impression
that it gave to me”, then it is obvious that he finds it beautiful. But another person
looks at the same painting and says “What is this Picture about? It is nonsense. ”,
then it might not be beautiful to the person. That is why, beautiful or the sense of
beauty is totally subjective. It means, humans have different tastes in beauty and it
is highly personal.
But then again All that Glitters is Not Gold. When we talk about beauty in people.
we often refer to their physical attractiveness. It is true that beautiful or handsome
people are more appealing. But we can have a reliable relationship and long lasting
trust only on the personalities of people. Physical appearance of a person might fade
away as years pass on; but their characters do not.
As William Shakespeare said “Beauty lives with kindness.”
So,We should seek for inner beauty.
The legends who have made us realize the importance of inner beauty are: Nelson
Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa.
Some people say that if inner beauty is more important, then how come people
spend most of their money on clothes, hair, make up. Actually, appearance is about
how people perceive themselves. If they look good, they feel better.
The better they feel, the better they are happy and the happy they are, they treat
people better. As simple as that.
The concept of beauty has evolved from era to era. People lived in early 60’s and
70’s had different tastes for beauty than modern people. In the earlier days, women
had to be fat to be considered as beautiful .The concept of beauty is again changing
gradually with the popular actresses like Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, Salma
Hayek and Jennifer Lopez who are promoting curvy figure.
But I hate that In modern world, The definition of Beauty is heavily influenced by
Media .Today’s Media is changing the perception of individuals about beauty.
Media is making people desire the so called ideal standards of appearance and
beauty penetrated by them in our mind.
So many people are influenced by what society says beautiful. We spend so much
time trying to look like what society wants that we begin to see others and ourselves
as what is presented physically rather then who a person is.
I think a human should have a balance between personal taste and social ideals of
beauty.
Beauty is everywhere. Anyone can find it whereever he or she looks. It can be in a
child’s laughter. It can be found in animals playing with each other. It can be in the
touch of rain. It can be anywhere. As the Chinese philosopher Confucius said
“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”
Only when we know what real beauty is, we will understand what we see in the
outside is just a projection. What really matters is the character inside. Like how we
see a jack-fruit as a hard and rough fruit outside, but a sweet and yummy piece of
delight inside.
I want to finish my speech by an quote by the American author Helen Keller
“The Most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched,They must
be felt with the heart.
