K-12 Grading System and Promotion Policy
Everyone aims to succeed in the different aspects of living especially in the educational
system of our country. As we adopt to drastic change, the Department of Education
implemented the K to 12 program for the learners to be able to excel with the same level as the
learners in other countries who have already K to 12 program. The implementation of this
program must be assessed and evaluated for us to determine if this is truly effective and
efficient to produce globally competitive learners.

For us to be able to assess and evaluate the effects and results of this program, there
are policy guidelines in the classroom assessment that will be followed by every institution both
DepEd and Non-DepEd schools. These policy guidelines are very helpful to cater the needs of
the 21st century learners. As a future educator, I commend the strict implementation of the policy
guidelines for the schools to be able to provide life-long learning. The enactment of these policy
guidelines in the assessment involves the different stakeholders such as parents and guardians
who could be able to give follow-up implementation at home. It means that learning will not stop
in school but also it will be continued at home. And also, stakeholders’ support is very essential
for the learners to be more motivated in their studies.

The school’s vision, mission, and philosophy must also follow the policy guidelines so
that all the school’s programs and activities will reflect to the K to 12 program. The classroom
assessment must also be based with the different types of learners which compose of the
multiple intelligences. A good classroom assessment plan gathers information of the student’s
learning that will provide the teachers more data in their instructional decisions. Classroom
assessment will improve the learner’s academic achievement, enhance their motivation,
increase student engagement, define their learning goals and personalize learning experiences.
Use of Portfolio Assessment

Different assessment tools are being used to measure the learner’s performance both in
academic and extra-curricular activities. One of these tools is the portfolio assessment. The use
of portfolio assessment as a classroom assessment tool is very favourable in a classroom
setting in order to assess the learners’ aptitude, competency and proficiency.

The research presented is quiet beneficial to all educators for it is a guide to have a valid
and suitable learning assessment for learners. In the teaching and learning process, different
approaches and techniques change from time to time. From traditional instruction to the new
form and ways of assessing our learners, portfolio is used. The use of portfolio as an
assessment plays an important role to the educational system. In the traditional approach, it
mostly promotes learners to memorize only the important things in a specific subject. For
example, in mathematics, the student memorized the Pythagorean Theorem. But in
constructivism approach according to Piaget and Vygotsky, student’s learning are being
measured to promote Higher Order Thinking Skills. Our goal is to produce learners who
possessed the 21st century learning skills such as problem solver and critical thinker.

The use of portfolio as an alternative method gives more reliable and dynamic data to
teachers and the data gathered will give a thorough interpretation both on the learner’s progress
and the teacher’s instructional materials. The child’s performance will not only be limited to
some basis like individual writing, reading, memorizing but also in other aspects like working in
groups. And also, the involvement of stakeholders will help the portfolio assessment efficient
and effective. Though, there are also some disadvantages in this type of assessment, however
full cooperation and support from the students, parents/guardians, educators and other
stakeholders will help it through. The study encourages us not only in the Turkish educational
system but including the other countries that portfolio assessment is not the only way to get a
valid and credible assessment but also the use of other methods like the traditional approach.
The integration of the different approaches and methods in assessment will improve the
student’s performance since we all have a lot of options that will be suited to every learner
based on his weaknesses and strengths. Having many options is imperative.
Teaching and Learning in the Affective Domain

The review of the research about affective domain in the teaching and learning process
shows an exquisite explanation about the importance of affective domain in instilling life-long
learning.

Students’ emotions play a vital role to their behaviour in class and in dealing with other
people. One of the definitions of affective domain that was being defined by Bloom (1956) in the
study is that it describes changes in interest, attitudes and values, and the development of
appreciations and adequate adjustment in an environment. Through one’s actions, we can
easily identify if a person is struggling or not. In learning, one’s emotions and behaviour will
always be considered since it will reflect to the person’s actions. People said that there must be
confidence in learning. Having a positive outlook in life leads to success. Though there is no
assurance that you will have a better life after you graduate in college with flying colors, but if
you are determined and dedicated that you will achieve your goals with positive attitude and
thinking, you will be successful.

In psychology, psychologists believe that a person’s brain is like an empty cup. The
water that you will put in your cup is the knowledge that you have gained, so if your cup is filled
with water, it means you learned a lot. And then in order for you to learn more, you will empty
your cup again by spilling the water inside it. Same as with your emotions, you learn how to
empty yourself by exhaling negative things and inhaling positive vibes. As we learn new things,
we must always remember to empty our cup to fill it with another information, same with our
emotions.

Thus, if a person is motivated and encouraged to study, he will have good grades, but if
he is being discouraged and is under the weather, it may result to poor performance. So it is
very important to have a positive thinking and stable emotion to become successful not only in
school but also for a lifetime.
