Concept Notes

Knowing Oneself………
Knowing yourself means understanding your strengths and weaknesses, your
passions and fears. It also includes your desires and dreams. It means being
aware of your eccentricities and idiosyncrasies, your likes and dislikes, and
your tolerances and limitations. Knowing yourself means knowing your
purpose in life, particularly your role in the community.

Why is getting to know yourself so important?

To be honest, it is up to you to decide for yourself the importance of knowing your identity and whether
you want to go on that journey. It takes courage and willingness to discover more about yourself. By
doing such, this will also help you understand others, too.
What is the Importance of Knowing Oneself?

 It helps us in decision making: It helps us to decide properly in life. Thus if you identify how
good you are in Mathematics, you can decide to go into accounting as a career.
 Appreciating other people: Knowing yourself helps you understand other people with such
possessions, similar to yours. If you are moody, then you become considerate to people with
unpredictable mood swings.
 Knowing our weaknesses: When we identify our weaknesses (i.e. what we are not very good
at, this helps us to relate to others better. Our weakness can be pride, laziness, dishonesty etc.)
 Understand yourself: This tells us who we are and makes us able to accept ourselves. This
helps other people believe in us when we understand and believe in ourselves.

BUILD ON YOUR STRENGTHS AND WORK ON YOUR WEAKNESSES

Most failures emanate from weaknesses that are not recognized or probably recognized but not
given appropriate attention or remedy. This could be a weakness in communications, personality or
ability. Instead of giving up or indulging in self-pity, take action. Go for speech lessons, get skills
upgrading, attend personality development sessions or whatever appropriate remedies to your perceived
weakness. Instead of simply focusing on your weaknesses, recognize your own talents and abilities, build
on them, utilize them to your greatest advantage. This is where you can build your name and popularity.
Handicapped people like Jose Feliciano and other blind singers did not brood over their physical
handicap. They recognized that they have a golden voice so they search for ways to enrich that talent and
now they have won international fame in the field of music.
