IIUC.
Experiment No: 02

Experiment Name: Familiarization with different types of tools and wiring based appliances.

Objective:
 To learn about different types of tools and wiring based appliances.

Familiarization of Tools:

1. Different Types of pliers:

I. Combinational Pliers: This allows the tool to grip to be much tighter than using just

your hand. Combination pliers are called such because they can perform a combination

of jobs. They are most typically used for gripping, compressing, bending, twisting,

extracting and cutting various materials.

These multipurpose tools have three separate sections in

the jaws. From the tip, the first part is a serrated gripping
surface. A round serrated section behind this makes
gripping tubes and other thick round objects easier. Finally,
the section closest to the fulcrum contains a cutting surface.
Often mistaken for linesman pliers, the latter lacks a
rounded center section in the jaws.

II. Side Cutting Pliers: Side cutters are used to cut wire and the leads (or legs) of
components in electronics. They can also be used to strip the insulation from wire. The
video below shows small electronic side cutters being used to strip the insulation from
the wires of a battery clip.

Proper use of side cutting pliers:

 Many applications including electrical,

communications and construction work
 Use to grip, splice or cut wires, and strip
insulation.
III. Nose Pliers : Nose pliers (also known as pointy-nose pliers, long-nose pliers, pinch-
nose pliers or snipe-nose pliers) are both cutting and holding pliers used by artisans,
jewellery designers, electricians, network engineers and other tradesmen to bend, re-
position and snip wire. Their namesake long nose gives excellent control while the
cutting edge near the pliers' joint provides "one-tool" convenience. Because of their
long shape they are useful for reaching into small areas where cables or other materials
have become stuck or unreachable with fingers or other means.

IV. Monkey Pliers: It’s used to hold the wire on one side.

2. Different Types of Screw Drives:

I. Standard Screw Drives: Screwdriver, tool, usually hand-operated, for turning screws with
slotted heads. For screws with one straight diametral slot cut across the head, standard
screwdrivers with flat blade tips and in a variety of sizes are used. Special screws with cross-
shaped slots in their heads require a special screwdriver with a blade tip that fits the slots. The
most common special screw is the Phillips head (Phillips Screw) as shown in the Figure.

II. Thin Blade Screw Drives: This screw drives are same as standard screw drives,
just the blade of screw driver is thin
III. Square Blade Screw Drivers: This screw drives are also same as standard screw drives,
Just the blades of screw driver is square. It’s known as plus (+) screw drives.

3. Wire strippers: A wire stripper is a portable handheld tool used by workers, especially
electricians, for removing the protective coating of an electric wire in order to replace or
repair the wire. It is also capable of stripping the end portions of an electric wire in order to
connect them to other wires or to terminals. A wire stripper is often considered an important
tool for professional electricians and other related personnel.
There is two main part, one is cutter and
other is stripper. That’s why it’s very
popular.

4. Electrician Knife: An electrician's knife is designed to cut electrical insulation, cables,

insulation, and more. Not only for electricians, this pocket knife is a great tool for anyone for
quick, easy cutting. Featuring two stainless steel blades, a screwdriver/ insulation cutter/ wire
scraper blade and a spear blade, this knife has an impact resistant handle. Made for comfort
during use, the ergonomic handle reduces hand fatigue. A shackle on the end of the handle
provides a place to attach the knife for convenient carrying

5. Hammer:
I. Straight Hammer: This is essentially the same as a cross peen hammer, except the pein is
vertically-aligned. While it may also be used to start nails, it is better reserved for shaping metal.

II. Ball Peen Hammer: Used primarily by engineers, the pein of this hammer is rounded. It’s
commonly used for rounding the edges of metal pins and fasteners, closing rivets, and shaping
metal. In past, it was a key tool used for a fabrication method called “peening”.

6. Adjustable Wrench: It’s Designed for tight and hard-to-reach spaces, the TEKTON 4 in.
Adjustable Wrench can take on bicycle repair and furniture assembly. It also works well to
secure back nut or bolt while tightening or loosening front nut or bolt with a socket or
combination wrench.

7. Wire Jointing Tape: Electrical tape (or insulating tape) is a type of pressure-sensitive tape
used to insulate electrical wires and other materials that conduct electricity. It can be made of
many plastics, but vinyl is most popular, as it stretches well and gives an effective and long-
lasting insulation.
8. Wire Connector: Wire connectors are UL Listed fasteners used to make a tight connection
with little interference between two or more electrical wires in an electrical box.

9. Wire Gauge: Wire gauge is a

measurement of wire diameter. This determines the amount of electric current a wire can safely carry,
as well as its electrical resistance and weight.

10. Tester: Confirm

that the circuit tester is working by carefully
touching the hot wire with one lead and a
neutral wire with the other. The tester will light
if it's working. Touch the hot wire with one lead
and the ground wire with the other. If the tester
lights, the ground wire is good and you can use
it.
11. Circuit breaker: A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to
protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short
circuit. Its basic function is to interrupt current flow after a fault is detected.
