Gantt Chart, Productivity, Working Time Factor

This document discusses project planning and management techniques. It provides details on Gantt charts, including how they represent activities, timescales, and durations. It also lists advantages of Gantt charts such as showing activity start/end dates and overlaps. The document discusses factors that can influence productivity on construction projects working at height. It provides an example calculation for determining factored productivity. Finally, it discusses working time factors and their impact on project duration estimates.

Characteristics/Representation of a
Gantt Chart
• On the left of the chart is a list of the
activities
• along the top is a suitable time scale
• Each activity is represented by a bar
• the position and length of the bar reflects the
start date, duration and end date of the
activity
advantages of a Gantt Chart
• It shows:
– various activities
– activity begins and ends
– How long each activity is scheduled
– Activities to be performed on a given day
– Where activities overlap with other activities, and
by how much
– The start and end date of the whole project
Pros and Cons
• Pros
– Communication to any level
– Excellent for Final Planning and Monitoring
– Ideal for simple and sequential Projects
• Cons
– Dependencies cannot be represented
– Limitation in number of activities
– Cannot use for complex projects
Factors that can influence the
productivity
Ideal productivity
• 2 crews each of 1 mason + 1 helper
• Total Quantity of Work to be done – 600 Sqm
• Productivity– 20 Sqm/day/crew
• Working Time – 10hrs/day

Duration = Quantity / Production

Production = Productivity * No. Crew

• Production = 20*2 = 40 sqm/day

• Duration = 600 / 40 = 15 days
Factored Productivity
• Block work is now being done at a height between 8m~15m by same crew.
• Quantity – 600 Sqm in each area
• Productivity at ground floor– 20 Sqm/day/crew
• For working at height we have consider the following factors that reduce
the efficiency of the crew
•Scaffolding and other equipment - 0.9
•Movement of materials – 0.9
•Safety precautions for working at height – 0.95
• Working time for the crew is 10 hours a day

Answer
• Factored productivity for Working at height
20-[(1-0.9)*20]-[(1-0.9)*20]-[(1-0.95)*20] = 15 Sqm/Day
Duration= 600 / (15*2)= 20 Days
Painting of a Bridge is being undertaken. The
average productivity of the crew is 25 sq mt/day.
Area of the bridge is 500 sq mt. What is the
estimated duration to complete the painting of
bridge?
Assume the factored productivity are:
Scaffolding and other equipment -0.75, Safety
precautions for working at height -0.4,
Movement of materials -0.8.
Working time factor
• 10 hr workday – productive time ?
• 9am-7pm
• Breaks 11-11:15am 1-1:45pm 4-4:15pm etc. the
effective working time is only 8.5 hours.
• Actual Working hours/Ideal Working hours 8.5/10 =
0.85
• Actual Duration = Ideal Duration/Working time Factor

• –For Block work on ground =15/0.85 ~ 18days

• –For Block work on scaffold =20/0.85 ~ 24days
• Calculate the duration required to paint a bridge having
an area of 1000 sqm. Productivity of the crew at
ground floor is 10 sqm/day. Assume the factored
productivity as follows: Scaffolding and other
equipment -0.75, Safety precautions for working at
height -0.65, Movement of materials -0.4. Working
time for the crew is 10 hours a day. Breaks form 12-
12:15 am, 2-2:45 pm and 4-4:15 pm.
• There are 5 activities A, B, C, D and E having duration
2,3,4,5,4 days respectively. Predecessor for B, C, D and
E activities is C, Dand E respectively. Calculate the
duration of the project. If due to unforeseen reasons
the activity C got delayed by 5 days, what will be the
new project duration?
