EC1001 EC1101 Question Paper

This document contains a mid-term examination for an introductory electronics course. It has 4 questions assessing students' understanding of diode and transistor characteristics, waveform analysis of circuits containing diodes, and analysis of a zener voltage regulator circuit. Question 1 has two parts asking students to calculate static/dynamic resistance of a germanium diode and change in current with temperature increase, and to find collector/emitter currents for a silicon transistor. Question 2 asks students to draw the output waveform for a circuit with a silicon diode. Question 3 asks students to sketch the output waveform and comment on the capacitor voltage for another circuit. Question 4 asks students to calculate maximum and minimum zener currents as the input voltage to a zener regulator varies

Mid-Term-I Examination: 2020-21
EC 1001/EC 1101 - Basic Electronics
(CLOSED BOOK)

Duration: 1 Hours Max. Marks: - 20

Instructions:
• Answer all questions
• Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.
• Calculator allowed

1. a. Find the static and dynamic resistance of a p-n junction germanium diode if [6]
the temperature is 27OC and IO=1μA for an applied forward bias of 0.2V. If
the temperature increase to 400 C what will be the change in the diode current.

b. A Silicon transistor with β = 100 has base-to-collector leakage current of 5 [2]

µA. If the transistor is connected in common-emitter operation, find the
collector and emitter current for base current 20 µA.
2. Draw the waveform of the output voltage VO in Figure 1, for the given input, levelling [4]
its time and magnitude. Assume diode is a silicon diode.

Fig. 1

3. Sketch the output waveform for the circuit and input waveform shown in Figure 2 of [4]
one complete cycle. Does the voltage across the capacitor remains constant in the next
half cycle? Why? Assume the diode as ideal.

Fig. 2
4. In a zener voltage regulator shown in Fig. 3 if Vz=10V, Rs =1kΩ, RL= 2kΩ. If the [4]
input voltage Vin varies from 22 to 40 V, find the maximum and minimum values of
Zener current.
