I. Introduction
Utility equipment is a type of construction equipment which used in digging holes,
hoisting and setting utility poles and lifting other materials. There are types of
utility equipment as bucket truck, boom truck, digger derrick and much more
which available in a wide variety of sizes, capacities and configurations.

II. Digger Derrick

A digger derrick is type of equipment used to dig holes, set poles and work with
different types of materials. These machines can handle anything from
transformers to cross arms and backfill material such as dirt and rock. Although
digger derricks are known as the workhorse of the utility industry, also they are
often used to complete construction and telecom jobs.

Terex Utilities was the first company to design and build hydraulic digger derricks,
and their focus on innovation continues to this day. Digger derrick consists of
several models from the Terex General and Commander Product lines.
 COMMANDER-5045
 SKYLIFT- 6000
 TEREX-COMMANDER 4047
 TEREX-GENERAL 65

The Skylift 6000 offers another reliable digger derrick option. The Super 6000
provides the largest lift capacity of any competing rear easement model and one of
the lowest stow heights. The full-pressure hydraulic ground controls grt rid of all
the concerns related to have to deal with wiring diagnostics when performing
protective maintenance. The narrow retracted track width allows you to maneuver
the digger derrick in narrow spaces.

III. Types of digger derrick
Digger derricks could also be found in a variety of models, sizes, sheave heights
and winch capacities to meet every need and application. Digger derricks could be
found in three model types:
 Distribution derricks
 Transmission derricks
 Backyard derricks

a. Distribution derricks
Distribution derricks are designed to serve the electric utility and
telecommunication industries with building, maintaining, and servicing critical
infrastructure. Distribution derricks used in distribution sheave height and more
lifting capacity to get the job done. These derricks are considered the everyday
workhorse.

b. Transmission derricks
Transmission derricks are designed to serve those who build, maintain, and service
transmission infrastructure. Transmission equipment is larger than distribution
equipment, used for greater reach and higher lifting capacities for the big jobs, and
considered the perfect choice to maximize lift capacity.

IV. Digger derrick working mechanism

A digger derrick has hydraulically powered auger which used to dig the ground,
creating a hole. This auger is used in different types of ground. Ground type plays
a major role in the success of digging a hole. Soft sand and dirt is easy to dig.
During fifteen minutes a seven-foot hole can be dug. Harder soil as heavy clay, or
perhaps rock is more difficult to dig. To determine the dimensions of the hole the
equipment can dig, first you have to know the specifications of your unit. The
sheave height of a digger derrick determines the unit's optimal digging radius and
the size pole the unit can lift. The digger derrick uses winch to pick up and move
the materials to the right place. Poles are set into the hole created by the auger
properly by the help of pole guides.

V. Advantages
 Used in construction work and telecom jobs
 work Hydraulically
 provided with a fiberglass third stage
 Equipped with high speed winches
 mounted on a chassis or track vehicle
 Used in applications underground and overhead

VI. Used digger derrick

Buying a new digger derrick is not an option. The only option is to purchase a
used digger derrick. There are questions as to whether the business will get full
value from a used digger derrick. Purchasing a used vehicle is worth the
investment, those are some reasons:

Page | 6
 Many Good Quality Trucks
The economic downturn created problems for many people a few years
ago, such as job losses. These unfortunate events have made better
opportunities for others. As a result of this unexpected crisis, the market
is filled with gently used Digger Derricks for incredibly low prices.
Therefore, you shouldn't miss buying one of them right now as it
considered a golden opportunity.
 Less Risk
As any business owner considering such a purchase knows the costs as
well as the risks of purchasing a new digger derrick in this kind of
economy. Buying a used version of this vehicle is a much better chance
to take.
 Shorter Loan Term
When financing used Digger Derricks, buyers do not have to be
concerned about the burden of an expensive loan for a long period of
time because these trucks generally have a shorter loan repayment period.
 Lower Insurance Premiums
Insuring the truck is the next cost for any vehicle owner. Insurance rates
are typically higher for property damage coverages over the first few
years; this obstacle is avoided with the purchase of a vehicle that is
beyond those first years of ownership.

 Affordable Price and Flexibility

Used Digger Derricks are their affordable price. One of these vehicles
can cost as much as 50 percent less than the truck’s original price. There
are many other ways any business can use the money saved.

Although all these advantages listed there are some risks when buying used ones.
Since the digger derrick has already been used by a previous owner, the possibility
of getting a poorly functioning truck still exists. Those are some ways to ensure
finding a quality vehicle when purchasing used Digger Derricks.

 Purchase Fleet Trucks

Buying fleet Digger Derricks increase the chance of buying a quality used
digger derrick. Fleet trucks are run by utility companies that have strict

Page | 7
regimens in maintaining their vehicles and they sell their used Digger
Derricks in good condition.
 Check the Odometer Reading
The odometer records the number of miles the truck has traveled over the
years of its operation. When buying used Digger Derricks, avoid vehicles
with high odometer readings as this means that the truck could require major
maintenance costs in the near future.
 Check the Maintenance History
The maintenance history is a record of repairs and servicing the truck has
undergone over its lifetime. Make sure that any used Digger Derricks that
are considered for purchase have been regularly serviced and does not show
involvement in a major accident.
 Use a Reliable Dealer
The internet is the best place to look for used Digger Derricks. Make sure to
be cautious, however, as there are some deceptive dealers on the internet. Be
sure that the dealer is associated with a major manufacturer and has a good
reputation.

After all, the reasons of buying used digger derrick after following the suggestions
listed above would be a wise decision. Any previous doubts about buying used
digger derricks should be gone now as everything becomes so clear.

VII. Digger derrick rental

It’s preferred to rent the digger derrick and considered prudent business decision in
the following cases:

 If you need a digger derrick for a temporary project.

 If your work volume suddenly increases.
 Renting can also pay dividends if you need a machine with the latest
technological advancements.
 Renting late-model machines will save time and make your job easier.
 When you rent, you won't incur additional costs such as maintenance,
storage and insurance.
 Renting allows you to test out a piece of equipment you're thinking of
buying before making a long-term financial commitment.

Page | 8
VIII. Conclusion
Digger derrick plays a vital role in our everyday lives. Companies use these
vehicles to dig holes and set the poles used by electrical utility and
telecommunication companies, in addition those used for signage and outdoor
advertising. The most important challenge is to operate these machines in the safest
manner possible to reduce the risks.
