I. Title of Material/Introduction

Self-directed Module in Mathematics 2 Quarter 1

Week 7. In this module, you will be familiar with the
commutative property of multiplication. It is
important to understand this property as you will be
needing it in the succeeding lessons in math.

II. Objectives

Illustrates the commutative property of

multiplication and applies it in appropriate and
relevant situations.

III. Vocabulary List

Number sentence - expressed using number and

mathematical symbols.
Product – is the result of multiplying numbers.

IV. Pre Test

Complete the number sentence.

1. CV x 5 = 5x 4
2. 7 x = 2 x7
3. 10 x = 20 ; x 10 = 20
4. 9 x 4 = ;4x9=
5. x 5 = 15 ; 5 x = 15

V. Learning Activities

Commutative property of multiplication (CPM)

states that changing the order of the factor does
not affect the product.

Study the illustration below.

7 groups of 4 4 groups of 7

How many triangles are

there in the first group?

The expression for 7 How about in the

groups of 4 is 7 x 4. second group?

The expression for 4

groups of 7 is 4 x 7.

So, 7 x 4 = 4 x 7
Even if you change the order of the factors 7 and
4, that is: 7 x 4 or 4 x 7, you will get the same
product which is 28.

For both groups, the product is 28 that is, the

number of triangles for each group is 28.
