BATES Peripheral Vascular System

This document summarizes key aspects of examining the peripheral vascular system. It outlines the anatomy of arteries, veins and capillaries. It describes important symptoms to ask about including pain, weakness, numbness and color changes. It lists important topics for health promotion like screening for peripheral artery disease. Examination techniques are provided like measuring blood pressure, listening for bruits, palpating pulses. Special tests are described like the Allen test. Finally, it lists painful peripheral vascular disorders and mimics.

BATES Peripheral Vascular System

1. Know the anatomy of the arteries, veins, capillaries and lymph system
a. Arteries
i. Contain 3 concentric layers: intima, media, and adventitia
ii. Internal elastic membrane – borders intima & media
iii. External elastic membrane – separates the media from adventitia
b. Veins
i. Are thin-walled and highly distensible
ii. Also contains intima, media, and adventitia
c. Lymphatic system
i. Right lymphatic duct – drains fluid from the right side of the head, neck, thorax,
and right upper limb
ii. Thoracic duct – collects lymph fluid from the rest of the body
2. Know the concerning symptoms to focus on in the health history
a. Abdominal, flank, or back pain
