2.4. Site Planning and Preparation

Encroachment permit will be obtained first before starting of any activity in the site. Once the area is
determined and granted, the safety personnel will established the perimeter barricade to warn others
and to prevent the public from entering the worksite. If rerouting is necessary the safety personnel will
establish first the rerouting of access roads and install warning devices to warn passing traffic in the
area. Once all necessary equipment is positioned, commenced the preparatory job, this isolation
method will be strongly employed throughout the duration of the project to prevent hazard to the public.
Also a Safety watchman will be kept continuously for public and workers safety
2.5. Work Methodology

2.5.1. Access Road and Mobilisation

 An access road will be provided for utility vehicle and heavy transportation for site
construction and a site lay down for storing the delivered materials required for the project.
 Install hard and soft barricades with rope line and warning tape around the work site.
 To control the dust in access road, the road will be compacted and paved with gravel or
regular spraying of water will be provided.
 There will be one way traffic in operation to access road, with a signed speed limit of 20kmph.

2.5.2. Installation of Traffic Sign and Warning Sign

 Traffic sign and warning sign will be established in all the required area which will be written
in Arabic and English.
 Traffic signs will be installed at approaches to site and on site, parking areas and elsewhere
as needed to direct construction and affected public traffic.
 Flag person shall be provided to regulate traffic when construction operations or
traffic encroach on public traffic lanes. Flagman will be in an elevated position with
physical hard barriers.

2.5.3. Installation of Hard barricade and Safety Pole

 Barricade and safety pole will be installed around the work site to keep public away from
moving equipment during construction activities, cautionary signboards in Arabic and English
languages will be posted along work site.
 Hard Barricades will be installed along the road highway with early warning devices and traffic
signs will be provided as per RC Roads Dept. in Arabic and English languages.

during the demolition and excavation
 Provide hard barricading and roping line and warning sign near the slope of demolished
existing structure and excavated area, to aware the operator its limit and to the
worker/personnel on site. And install reverse stopper to prevent the vehicle overrunning the
edge of excavation

2.5.4. Diversion of flow of water along existing channel

 Construct a temporary detour structure to divert the water flow away from the open
excavation or the working area if required or provide a dewatering pump in order to make the
channel dry in parts in order to proceed with the repair work. (Refer Appendix-01 for sketch)
 Divert the flow of water by opening the drainage channel across to the open space area that
link the temporary channel from and to the existing drainage channel. Make the working area
more spacious and have big clearance for construction activities.
 Blocking the flow of water from drainage channel using sand bags fill of sand and excavated
materials stock piled at the adjacent area, from the approach and to the outlet of the existing
culvert to avoid seepage near the drainage channel to be replaced.

 Use cement grout (MSDS attached in Appendix-02) or lean concrete or equivalent to seal
the surface joint of the structure to prevent seepage and to prevent possible cave-in during
excavation of new construction.
 Maintaining the distance from the approach to working area of 5meter minimum same as
opposite side to outlet, where the temporary structures install. Flow of water will be free from
debris and loose materials from the demolished existing structure. (The risk assessment for

2.5.5.1. Replacement of Drainage Channel with new one

2.5.5.1.1) Dewatering System

As the bottom of drainage slab and wall foundation is probably lower than water table level,
therefore dewatering system is required and considered as an important part of the entire
execution. To draw out water a sump pit will be made below the working level. The water
contained in the sump pit can be pumped out by means operation of the Submersible Pumps
at the bottom of pit. The outlet of the pump will towards on a settlement basin within the
vicinity where location will be prior planning. Refer Appendix-2B, plan showing the detailed
drawing of dewatering system. The water from the channel will be discharged at sea,
where this channel usually discharges.

2.5.5.1.2) Concrete Breaking

 The replacement part of the Drainage Channel will be broken by means of mechanical
equipment. The debris will be stacked in an area where there is no hindrance to the traffic
flow, area of work or work progress and then will properly be removed immediately once
breaking activity will be finished.
 The removal of the debris will be done using a Loader and Dumpers.
 All debris will be dumped in RC designated dumping areas.
 Hearing protections like Ear plugs and Ear muffs will be provided.

2.5.5.1.3) Excavation and Backfilling

 Once demolition is finished or partly finished, excavation can be done. Stake and layout the
area to be excavated including the clearance for the slope according to the depth of the
excavation. The excavation of the channel will be done at replacement area only as
shown in sketch and shop drawing. (Refer Appendix-2 and 2A respectively for details)
 Slopes of excavation shall be cut at the angle of repose for the soil conditions.
 All spoil material excavated must be kept a distance away from the edge equal to the depth of
the excavation.
 During excavation maintain the minimum distance from the slope of existing structure at least
2 meter from moving equipment. Barricades and warning signs shall be identified at the
excavation.
 Stakes, control survey points, and benchmarks shall be establish and maintained during
construction activities.
 Provide adequate sheeting, bracing, shoring and other support to the sides and ends of all
excavation to provide the safety of all workers and to prevent the occurrence of falls or runs

constructed structures adjacent to the excavation.
 The bottom of the excavation shall be keep free from over saturation. In no case shall the soil
be scrapped and dug by equipment near to the bedding formation level as the result of the
disturbance of the material below.
 No filling materials shall be placed until all the concrete placement and construction are
completed below the elevation of finished grades.
 The surface of the subsoil to receive filling shall be cleaned and prepared as specified. All
formworks, trash and debris shall be removed from the excavation.

start curing.
 Install fabricated reinforcing bar then install shuttering and shoring for concrete wall
foundation.
 Pour concrete using concrete pump, conduct slump test and temperature in each transit
mixer.
 Remove the shuttering then commence immediately with curing by applying two (2) layers of
burlap and cover it with polyethylene sheet then keep the surface wet continuously by
spraying water.
 Once curing period has been elapsed concrete surface preparations shall follow, install water
proofing membrane for concrete below grade and apply coal tar epoxy for above grade
concrete.
 Backfill the additional concrete wall after water proofing and work has been inspected and
accepted by RC Field Engineer.
 Coating of concrete for above the ground surface shall follow as per requirements.

using Cementations Grout
 Clean the unsound concrete. It must be free of oil, dirt, debris and paint.
 Chipped the unsound concrete exposing the aggregates using scabbler, bush hammer with
minimum thickness of 3mm until the unsound concrete is removed and exposing the
aggregates.
 Remove all residue using a vacuum cleaner or compressor then finally clean it with water and
dry it making the concrete open surface texture with all curing compound and sealers
removed.
 Soak concrete surface for twenty four (24) hours prior to grouting.
 Mix small amount of grout as per your requirement as working time usually only 10 minutes to
avoid non-workable mix.
