Physical or Mineral Sunscreen (Sunblock)

This document discusses physical/mineral sunscreens and chemical sunscreens. Physical sunscreens contain ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that deflect or block UV rays. They provide broad spectrum protection and can be applied right before sun exposure. However, they may leave a white residue and need frequent reapplication. Chemical sunscreens contain ingredients that absorb UV rays before they reach the skin. They generally provide better UVA/UVB coverage but must be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied more often. The document also discusses concerns about the chemical oxybenzone, which has been linked to birth defects when pregnant women are exposed and may contaminate pools/beaches. It recommends choosing mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide

Physical or mineral sunscreen (sunblock)

Ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide protect your skin by deflecting or blocking
the sun's rays.
PROS

 Zinc oxide provides broad protection against both UVA and UVB light
 Starts protecting right after applying—no need to wait before going in the sun
 Better tolerated by most skin types
 Lasts longer in the sun
CONS

 May not offer as much UVA protection compared to chemical sunscreens

 Thicker cream may be more difficult to apply and may leave white residue on skin
 Can rub off, sweat off and rinse off easily—more frequent application is required.
 Needs to be generously applied to be fully effective.
Chemical sunscreen
Chemical filters like Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octisalate, Octocrylene and Oxybenzone work by
absorbing the UV rays before they reach the skin.
PROS

 Generally more coverage against UVA and UVB rays, but range of protection depends on
ingredients
 Easier to apply and invisible when applied
CONS

 May be more irritating for some people—can cause allergic reactions

 Must wait 20 minutes after applying for effective sun protection
 Starts degrading in sunlight, so need to reapply more often
 Can clog pores and increase breakouts on acne prone skin.

(Gundersen Health System,2019)

Sunscreens are used commonly to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful rays, and have been found to
cause little toxicity in animals.11 The products have very limited dermal or systemic
absorption.10 Sunscreens have been used in pregnancy to treat or prevent melasma, and adverse events
have not been reported.30 (Can Fam Physician,2011)
OXYBENZONE PADA WANITA HAMIL
Researchers from the laboratory have just published a study in the journal Reproductive
Toxicology indicating a link between oxybenzone exposure and the formation of birth defects
during the first trimester of pregnancy – specifically, a defect called Hirschsprung’s Disease

Oxybenzone that is contaminating swimming pools and beaches can be absorbed directly into
the skin of pregnant women and children, increasing their exposure to oxybenzone and the risk
associated with that exposure

PENGGUNAAN PADA ANAK-ANAK

Once your baby reaches 6 months of age, it’s time to introduce sunscreens.
Choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen that offers a
minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15. Look at the active ingredients;
zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are good choices, because these physical
filters don’t rely on absorption of chemicals and are less apt to cause a skin
reaction
